Okay, I'm heading home for Christmas on Wednesday. This weekend, my mom wants me and my sis, my aunt and her daughter, and maybe a friend of my sis to all get together and make some gingerbread houses. None of us have ever done this, so it will be quite a scene! Does anyone have some good tips or websites to look at? My mom also mentioned maybe using graham crackers rather than actual gingerbread if that would be easier?

sounds like fun... i think that graham crackers are easier...but i am going to get a gingerbread house kit that already has everything that you need there.

I think Good Housekeeping has gingerbread house recipes in their December issue every year. You may want to try their website.

Interesting, maybe gingerbread houses are just a US thing! Anyway they are houses made out of ginger bread cookies, held together by frosting, and decorated with candy- think gumdrops shrubs, candy cane gutters, wafer roof.
I just had a horrible experience making one, I think I was suppossed to use more cardboard on the inside to hold it up. It lasted 5 minutes. I ate the whole thing anyway- it was from a kit at the craft store.. I've made them before and it went okay.. When I was younger my girl scout group made them using empty school size paper milk cartons as the base, but you have to cut the ginger bread into the right sizes before you bake it.

Gilly, don't believe her. A gingerbread house is made entirely out of boiled, reconstituted cabbage and bathtub scum.

Good answer, but it gets me thinking... where are all the gingerbread women?
They must be rare or nil! I would hate to be a gingerbread man!

Ha! I had forgotten I started this thread. Thanks for the tips of where to look. I love the part about the Gingerbread women! If I make some cookies at the same time as the house, I'll definately make men AND women!

I'm impressed that you know how to do this. Any chance of posting some pictures?

I've always wanted to make a gingerbread house. I have a design that I photocopied out of a magazine for making a really cute gingerbread birdhouse. It looked like it would be fairly easy for a beginner. The only problem is that the icing to glue it all together calls for meringue powder. I've looked everywhere and can't find meringue powder! Advice, anyone?

Oh goodness, I may be too embarassed to post pics!
Just kidding, of course I will! It may be a little bit before they get posted though, b/c I don't have a digital camera yet. I'm supposed to get one for Christmas, but we're gonna be doing the houses this saturday, so I won't have it yet. Promise to try and get them posted ASAP though

I'm sorry to mislead you... I must say, I was quite sick to find that out after I ate it...

Anyway, you can probably find the ingredients for gingerbread down at the local grocery store- flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking soda or power, ginger and probably other spices are needed- I would suggest googling for gingerbread recipe, and also googling for frosting- the stuff I used just came out of the package..
