First song I remember hearing my father sing: "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," by Hank Williams, Senior.

First song I remember hearing my mom sing: "Red Sails In The Sunset"... don't know who wrote it.

First song I ever learned to sing (aside from Christmas carols): "Freight Train," written by Elizabeth Cotton, a freed slave.

First song I ever learned to play on guitar: "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," by Bob Dylan.

First 45: "The Boxer," by Simon & Garfunkel.

First album: "Highway 61 Revisited," by Bob Dylan.

First 8-track: "Madman Across The Water," by Elton John.

First cassette: "There Goes Rhymin' Simon," by Paul Simon.

First CD: "The Nightfly," by Donald Fagen (half of Steely Dan).

I don't listen to older music regularly, but I do get in moods where I want to. I was a little girl in the 80's, so I never really paid much attention to the lyrics, but I loved the tunes. One of my favorite songs when I was 10/11 was Like a Prayer by Madonna
because I loved the sound of it. So, now it's sort of cool to not only enjoy the tune, but to also be able to relate to most of the lyrics in some of the songs I used to sing along with.

Under the cats, mostly.
I always loved Bryan Adams..... but when I was in primary school, it was Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue all the way! How sad...... I could never forget the 80's BIG hair scene! And can you remember the clohes with shoulder pads, BIG owl glasses and colours in make-up you wouldn't be seen dead in?

*giggle* I was in my late teens/early twenties in the eighties - so of course what I well remember is the "Disco" era ... I had this absolutely to-die-for pair of baby blue platform shoes and would wear ~yellow~ glittery eyeshadow. *LOL*

When I walk through a clothing store nowadays, I look at all the 60's and 70's-style clothing, especially the "peasant blouses" and think ... "Wow, did these people come and clean out my closets cuz I had a shirt JUST like that one!!!"

I regret to say that the first concert I was dragged to was Sonny & Cher. I was young then. Otherwise, late 70's and 1980's music is what I had as a teenager/young adult.

Help me out here since I just cannot remember. What group did David Lee Roth sing for?

I'm an 80s girl too!

Culture Club, Princess (very obscure), General Public, Human League, Prince, Michael Jackson, Howard Jones, Wham!, Oingo Boingo, Morris Day, Full Force, etc.

Ah, back when music was music!

I was a teen in the 80s and that described my record collection
! I even taped both Herman's Hermits movies when they came on TV.

Thanks gayef. Did you know that David Lee Roth is now/was a New York City Paramedic. Who would have thought?

I was seriously into Cliff Richard (Don't Talk to Him and Summer Holiday), Fabian, Ricky Nelson, Elvis and I loved the songs by Johnny Crawford from The Rifleman - Mr. Blue and Your Nose is Going to Grow.

I am so O-O-O-O-O-L-D! This thread has really been rubbing it in. Music from the 80s and 90s OLD??

But the good news is that so many of you "youngsters" love and care for furbabies. The new generation is in fine shape so long as that is true.

I became a teenager in 1952 -- graduated from high school in 1957 -- Jim and I were married two years later. Four years older than me, he is REALLY old.

Our music in our dating and younger married years? Ray Charles, Bill Haley and His Comets, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berrry, The Everly Brothers, Hank Williams, Bobby Darin, Fats Domino, Les Paul and Mary Ford, The Big Bopper, The Kingston Trio, Patsy Cline, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, The Weavers -- and, of course, Frank Sinatra and Elvis -- The King! So many more lovely memories. No room to list them all.

Thank you so much for taking me back and reminding me of them. They were the greatest! We all, of course, treasure those years of our lives, and our music is such a great part of those years. No matter when it was that we passed through those years the music of the time will be with us forever and we will always love it.

Oh really? No, I wouldn't have thought that but it is good to know if I ever need the information. Do you know what shift and house he works??? *pondering becoming injured in NYC upon next visit -smirk*

David Lee Roth was really a superior ~showman~. After he split from Van Halen, he tried to make it on his own briefly and came here to the Richmond Coliseum. It was a great show, filled with pyrotechnical effects, some half-way decent attempts at stand-up comedy and a lot of great music. A bunch of us rented limos and dressed up "glam-rock" style - we were invited backstage and a lot of the group did go, but I was with a "friend" at the time and we ended up elsewhere. *wink*

Sammy Hagar (now I've got "I Can't Drive 55" stuck in my head!!) tried to take his place as lead for Van Halen and while they did go on to produce some good music with Sammy, David Lee Roth made the Van Halen experience a lot more enjoyable, IMO.

And let the congregation say a hearty "Amen"!!!

These were the artists that my older sister followed and loved. We aren't so far apart in age really! Of those you listed I especially love Patsy Cline *sigh*

BeachBum, sounds like we grew up on the same kind of music. I still listen to surf and rockabilly. I love the older punk stuff, too, like Social Distortion and the Ramones.
