edit: I solved the problem... human error. I had brought a kit of measuring spoons ranging from 1tsp to 1cup. Turns out they did not give me a 1cup spoon, so I have been using a .5 cup all this time thinking it was 1cup. It just hit me that my measuring cup's 1cup is much larger than the scoop I was using for the food.

Hello,
I have two cats, Snickers (about 8 months old) and Carmella (about 2.5-3months old).

A few months before we got Carmella, Snickers would be fed all her food for the day in the morning and it would last for a 24 hour period (with some to spare). She was fed roughly 1 to 1.5 cups depending on how much was left in the bowl. However, when we got Carmella, she enjoyed eating everyone's food (including mine) so we had to change the routines.

I think I am feeding them too much as it is, but they still want more. They both have separate bowls and get fed the equal amount. I feed each of them 1 cup of dry food in the morning, 1 cup at around 4-5PM, and 1 cup at around 10PM. They chow the food down like they haven't ate in days.
Then, whenever my wife or I are in the kitchen, Carmella will jump on the table and cry for food. Snickers will then lick her bowl and cry for food. They do this each time we are in there. I feed them at 7:30AM, at 7:40 they are done eating, and then at 8:00AM they are crying for my wife to feed them! They try to open the container of food (which we hid now), they eat the things in the garbage, they eat our food!

Sometimes I feed them again during the night because they won't leave us alone (purring in our face, licking us, scratching the door, etc.) if they want food. I know I shouldn't give in to this, but I need my sleep.

What's going on? Is this common? Any suggestions would be great,
-rob.

I want to see what people say. My 2 5 year old male cats weigh 13 pounds each and are on a diet. I feed several times a day, but I give 1/8-1/4 cup dry food to Humble and 1 TBS of wet food to Shenandoah.

It also depends on the quality of food you feed - high quality (premium) requires smaller amounts vs cheaper supermarket type cat foods which contain greater amounts of filler.

Also, if you put your cats on a diet the amount should be determined by a Vet to make sure they are not in starvation mode and more harm than good is caused.

... the only diets that are safe to give very low(1/4 cup example for a ten lb cat) amount are usually RX since they are designed that way..

Your cats are kittens. Give them as much food as they want. If they have unlimited food at this point in their lives, it will make them much less prone to obesity when they get older because they will learn that there is no need to gorge on food when it is available.
