Hello everyone:

I am new here - I am happy I found this site - I have three kitties - all are 13 years old - they are rescues from different litters.

My main problem is Bouboulina - she used to be 21 pounds when we lived in Florida - I now have her down to 16 pounds -the problem is this. She cannot reach her behind to clean - so she is constantly licking her tummy and now it has no hair and the skin is red. However, the bigger problem is that she is constantly rubbing her behind on the carpets and the skin in her back area has become so red, so raw, it is almost a black/red. Also, the entire area of her backside now has no hair from all the rubbing on the carpets.

I wash her behind every morning and whenever I know she goes to the litter box. I don't use soap - just warm water and paper towels to clean. I have very often sprayed hydrogen peroxide on the area and it heals it right away - however, it never remains healed because she is at it again. I have applied calendula gel, antibiotic gel but then she is once again rubbing her hinney on the carpets.

I don't know what else to do. She just had a visit to the vet and all her blood work came back normal and the vet just implied she needs to lose more weight. But, what do I do in the meantime.???

Please, please, help.

Just a thought, but has she had her anal glans expressed recently? I know of some cats and dogs to "scoot" their rears when their anal glands were full and needed to be expressed. That is a simple procedure your vet can go. good luck with whatever your kitty has that is bothering her. A sore rear must now be very fun!

I was going to say this too....

Also any number of external parasites can cause the exsessive licking you discribe....

Also cats under stress...such as a move or a sickness for example can cause a cat to exsessivly groom themselves......

Cats with blocked urethras..or bladder infections can also scoot and exsessivly groom

In any case exsessive grooming like that is not normal...ecspecially since she is loosing hair......she needs to see a vet ASAP...

good luck...Hope its nothing serious

Good morning and thanks for the replies.

Bouboulina just came back from the vet about ten days ago - she had full blood work and exam. And, I am giving a homeopathic remedy for the licking which my homeopathic vet in Florida prescribed - the licking has been going on since we moved into this damned place - I have three kitties and it's always poor Bouboulina who has the problems - and, she is a very special personality, if you know what I mean - everyone just loves her - she is outgoing, fearless, you can even walk her on a leash if you want -......

I know that when she is in the bathroom and I hear her moaning in a low voice I look and eventually I find her in the litter box. I think she has a problem going. I will ask the vet about expressing the anal glands. She still needs to lose some more weight - I think I have now managed to get her used to the NEW feeding schedule and she is OK with it.

I just washed her hinney with a little sandlewood soap - nice warm rinse - a spray of hydrogen peroxide and half an hour later an application of the triple A antibiotic cream.

But, thanks for the suggestion - I will ask the vet about it.

Actually, no one is happy here - one of my three cats is so depressed I feel so bad. I am putting together a Bach flower remedy for her that my Homeo Vet prescribed. God, we have to get out of here ....

Bag balm works well too for this kind of thing. after the triple A ointment is gone and she gets better, maybe you coulod keep it handy in case it happens again. we use that at my shelter.

I think you might be doing more harm than good with the hydrogen peroxide. When I had my ears pierced, I was scrupulous about cleaning them with hydrogen peroxide, but several months went by, and they just wouldn't heal.

Finally, I went to a doctor and he told me to use Neosporin instead, because hydrogen peroxide "cleans" by essentially destroying a micro-thin layer of the surface it's applied to! That keeps it from getting infected, but it also discourages healing.

Also, I imagine it's pretty painful for the kitty, if his behind is sore to begin with! Maybe you should try a nice antibiotic cream. Neosporin is what my vet recommends, because Polysporin is more likely to cause an allergic reaction.

Good luck with your little one...

I would increase your cat's activity either by feeding her on on top of a big cat condo so she has to actually exercise to get her food, and I would also consider taking her off the holistic stuff and taking her to a feline specialist. She sounds miserable as do you. There are ways they can help her to make her more comfortable.

Is it possible she has some type of allergy? My cat licked almost all the fur off her stomach and we narrowed it down to an allergic reaction, and she had to be put on a prescription diet. Just an idea.
Whatever it is, I hope your poor kitty finds some relief soon. Good luck.
