Hi,

Miles has been making a lot of noises for the past few months, we are not sure if it is a cough or asthma or anything else.

He will be nice and calm or even sleeping and suddenly he will stretch out his neck and make this coughing-wheezing sound that appears to sometimes be coming from his mouth and sometimes through his nose….it sounds like he is trying to get something out of his throat or nose. If it was asthma I would think it would be triggered by a lot of activity but like I said he can be in a dead sleep and it suddenly happens.

We have him on hairball preventing food and recycled paper litter.

Please take a look at the video and you will see what he is doing (they are the same just different sizes and formats):

http://www.fotash.com/miles_cough/miles2.wmv (small 139k)

http://www.fotash.com/miles_cough/miles2-big.wmv (big 1.3Meg)

http://www.fotash.com/miles_cough/miles2.mpg (big 1.4Meg)

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Mitch and Miles

Does he have sneezing problems at all?
Teddy was coughing like crazy, coupled with his sneezing. The vet thought the coughing was weird and rare, so she took a chest x-ray to make sure he hadn't either eaten something, didn't have bronchitis, etc. Turns out his URI had caused him to develop a cough. If Miles has nasal problems too, his cough might clear up if that gets treated.

If there's no sneezing, I'd definitely have his lungs listened to and possibly a chest-xray (been there, done that for me!)

My Callie cat has done this before, but only when it turned cool and the humidity dropped. When we used the vaporizer, it stopped it. Maybe something as easy as that will 'cure' your problem.

Asthma isn't necessarily related to exercise. My cat used to be just lying around and suddenly she would be stretching her neck out wheezing. It's definitely a lot different noises than they make when they have a hairball.
The vet took x-rays of my cat, too. The cool thing was, I got to see the little bits of kibble in her stomach. But she did end up having asthma. I was a bit nervous at first, and still am very protective of her, but she usually does just fine on her medicine. It's really easy to give, because it's a tuna flavoured chew.

I looked at the first video, and it is just like when Rocky gets sick with his chronic URI. He also has feline asthma. A vet visit sooner rather than later is in order. If it is a URI, antibiotics may be in order, if it is a chronic condition, predisone or an injection could help. It doesn't sound like a hairball cough to me.

Hi Mitchel,

My 12 year old cat Tori has asthma and sounds a lot like your cat when she is having an episode. It's almost like they are trying to cough something up, yet nothing comes out. If a cat does have asthma, it's crucial he/she receives medication. Her episodes seem to be brought on more by stress and weather/air changes; however, they can and do still occur at other times.
Now with that being said, there's still a possibility it could be something else (URI-or the two combined) for which medication will still be needed.
Either way, your kitty needs to be seen in order to make the correct diagnosis, so it's good that you have booked an appointment.
Good luck!

That's exactly what my Cupid does, and he has asthma. He licks his nose a lot during the 'attack' like your cute kitty also.

Good luck @ the vet, though. Hopefully it's not asthma and is just allergies or something less serious.

I am interested in this because Wellington makes funny breathing noises, but intermittently. Sometimes it is a bit of a cough, sometimes like he is clearing his throat and sometimes just an 'mmm' sound. The vet says his lungs sound normal, but I am taking him for an xray next week. Sometimes I believe a heart murmur can cause changes in breathing.
