I went to the pet emergency clinic because my sweet cat Babyboy must have got hit by a car. He came home limping funny. they did an x-ray and showed me the fractures. the ysaid he should be fine after a month of basically being crate confined (to make sure he doesnt jump on things or walk too much, but he's only in the crate when i'm not home, i watch him when i am home though) anyway, they prescribed buprenex to ease the pain etc. but gave me enough to last only 2 days. i'm concerned after the 2 days he will still be in pain. secondly i think he is constipated. He has urinated several times but no movements. I looked up online and saw that pelvic fractures can do such things. Does anyone know of a good high-fiber food? or have any advice? and lastly i am concerned about the way he walks and healing process. I'm afraid he will heal wrong and have to have surgeory. they didnt put a splint on him. should thay have? anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated. He is my baby, he gets to walk around a bit each day and when he does, he rubs against my legs and tries to follow me, til i pick him up and lay him in my lap. He's so sweet

I don't know if its the same but I know with people pain killers can cause extreme constipation. You might ask for a different one if you suspect that is the case. Look into foods for cats that help bowl movements like pumpkin.

I live in the No. Va area near DC.
Stormyboots:

I sympathize totally with you. With 2 senior cats 15/16 yrs I know
about this issue!! Unfortunately cats CANNOT tolerate pain meds longer than 2 days - they lack the liver enzymes to break down the meds, and so they get toxic poisoning with pain meds used over 3 days long.

Please ask your vet to give you more info - they will happily explain. About the only safe pain meds is baby asprin and then, you can only give every 3 days I think. So they get one pain free day in 3...If you are interested, ask the vet. He/she may allow you to give them that.

My Diablo has arthritis in hind legs area, developed from being hit by
a car 4 years ago. (He was lucky, no breaks/fractures) Anyway, for pain control we've been doing accupunture - which (and I know you might laugh) seems to truely work. He gets it once every 4 wks at home - vet comes to visit, as is less stressful for him.

I also give him injectible glucosamine every 4 weeks since he can't tolerate the oral stuff - it is known as Adequan. In the US its just started being used in cats. They use over in the UK alot, and is used in dogs and horses alot too. V. helpful for arthritis - you may be using one day, when your cat develops arthritis from this injury (which as they age, he/she will most certainly do.)

I also do "belly massage" in the hopes of stimulating the colon/GI
tract to "move" stuff through - since he doesn't exercise much
now, I figure it can only help, LOL. Yes, alas I AM the crazy
cat lady.

Now, as to the diet bit. Diablo developed constipation as well,
though I think it is from stress and lack of exercise due to arthritis.

Sooo... I give him Sub Q fluids when he is really bad - that's what the
vet prescribes - it helps stool move thru and stay hydrated in the colon...
That's about every 2 wks for him. His kidney's are fine right now (cross fingers!!) It is pretty easy to do this at home for your cat. Although,
I must admit, unpleasant for ME to do to him...

Dietwise - fiber in the form of canned pumpkin is WONDERFUL. (But you can use metamucil or pysillum I think. There is good info out there on the
internet about it.)

I mix the pumpkin mash with cooked roasted chicken (yeah I roast a
chicken a week for my cats, LOL!!) or you can use canned chicken, broth from the chicken and 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil and some water (it is almost like a "soup") (By the way use low sodium broth/canned chicken and don't add salt to the chicken when roasting.)

Didi laps it right up ... it helps to hydrate, provide bulk AND the fat keeps the stool moving thru colon, and keeps it from dehydrating and turning hard
and painful ...

He gets this meal once a day or every other day once a day, the other meals are normal wet cat food. If you are feeding dry, soak the dry beans in milk or water. Its better though to not give dry if they have this problem...

Hope this helps you some!

Opilot, do you know much more about this? I posted a post here ] about one of my kitties that was prescribed a pain medication for 3+ weeks that is not approved for cats. Typically it's used for dogs with arthritis pain so I figure you may have heard of it. I don't want to change the topic of this post so if you get a chance to read mine I'd appriciate it.

I also forgot to put the stuff about your post. Did they put anything on him at all? A bandage? Or just send him home the way he came in? I can imagine pelvic fractures would be a hard thing to wrap/bandage because of it's location. How severe were the fractures? Kittens heal relativly quickly and if it's not a deep fracture he'll probably do well healing on his own. When my kitty broke his leg he had a bandage on which actually caused his leg to heal deformed because it slid down his leg and bent it funny. He walks fine now and you wouldn't even be able to tell that it's deformed so I would imagine your kitty should be fine as long as you continue to confine him.

Amoxiclav is fine  - the vet has prescribed it to prevent infection of your kitty's wounds. . I'm not aware of constipation or inability to urinate being a side effect, however, so you really need to contact your vet and let him know what is going on.   Four days is a very long time and it's possible that your cat  has developed a UTI.  Is he straining to use his box and unable to go?  If so, he needs to go to the vet ASAP to be evaluated for a blockage and UTI.  It's unlikely (though not impossible)   that he's actually picked up a urinary bacterial infection, since he's on the antibiotic, but crystals can still be a problem.

To help with the constipation, you can add pumpkin to his food.  Use the plain canned pumpkin, not the pie filling.  Here's a link that discusses dosages. http://www.thecatsite.com/t/244415/canned-pumpkin   You can also add metamucil to his food.  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/218092/what-kind-of-metamucil-am-i-supposed-to-give  And finally you can ask the vet for a laxative if the pumpkin or metamucil don't work.

What kind of food is your cat eating now?   If he's eating dried food, you should try him on canned food since he needs the extra hydration.  I don't know much about the nutritional angle of things so hopefully someone who does will pipe in and tell you what kind of canned foods are best for preventing constipation.  For now, here are a few articles that discuss some of the canned foods available.

I'm sorry your little guy is having such a difficult time.  I hope he feels better soon and heals up quickly.

Thank you for your advise i will contact the vet immediately, I thought because of his pain in the pelvis thats why he won't poo, he's eating royal canin wet food, he won't eat much if its dry that is why. It's my first time to experienced this situation, hmm. He can't sit that is why he won't go to his litter which is just on his side, but a few hours ago he did pee, so i was a bit relieved.

What a relief to hear he's peed.
(The things we get excited about here at TCS...)  Poor little boy must be so miserable.  What's his name, btw?  It may very well be that the only reason he's not pooping is because he's in too much pain to assume the position. Still, it's really not good for him to hold it.   I'm glad  you'll be contacting the vet - please let us know what (s)he says.

He may need an enema at this point. I would keep calling vets until you find one who will take this seriously.

Agree with this.  I don't understand why a vet wouldn't give you a laxative for your cat, even if for your own peace of mind.  It's not like it would hurt your kitty.
