I live in Michigan, where we currently have about 6 inches of snow on the ground. I've recently spotted a family of 4 kittens and 2 cats (who i assume are wild by their personality) outside. I've put warm water and food outside of my window for them everyday, so i can watch them. I think they are living under my neighbors deck. I want to capture them and take them to the vet, for I am concerned about their life span. What is the best way to do this without scaring them?

Thank you for your time.

Welcome...you need to borrow a humane trap from your local vet office or humane society. It would be best if you could borrow several to trap both cats and the kittens at the same time. Make sure you do not leave the traps unattended and remove the trap to someplace warmer (like your garage) when you have trapped a cat. They definately will need to be seen by a vet and spayed/neutered. For assistance, you can contact these groups in Michigan who may know someone in your area who practices TNR:

This site is very good to learn about feral cats and TNR:

If the kittens are still nursing, you need to trap the kittens first and the mom last. Kitten traps are helpful for this reason. Especially in cold weather, do not leave these traps unattended or the kittens could freeze quickly. If they are still dependent on the mom for milk, you need to leave her to be trapped for last. Most adult cats will not go into the kitten traps, they are much to small.
