Mizuho Securities said the company mistakenly sold 610,000 shares at 1 yen (less than 1 cent) per share, instead of fulfilling a client's request to sell just one share at 610,000 yen ... due to a simple data-input mistake....costing the company at least 27 billion yen ($225 million).

So the next time you have a bad day at the office or made a mistake just take this into perspective. Imagine the person who made the mistake.

This sooo doesn't surprise me. I am willing to bet it was the new guy.

What is a little different over here is...I highly doubt anyone will lose their job over this. The corporate board members or the CEO will do a lot of "Honto ni gomen nasai"s (We are truly sorry) with a few bows thrown in and everything will return to normal once the money is recovered.

So they'll be able to get the money back? Seems to me that they should!

The buyers sure had a good day!

That reminds me of one of my big mistakes. A few monts ago my bottled water company phones me & said that they had just received a check from me for $3000.00 instead of 30.00! I do my banking online & I guess I omited the decimal so the check went out for 3000.... yikes! I was so happy that they called before cashing it.

More often than not, people tend to only look at the numbers, and not read the written-out words for the numbers. That happened to my mother once. It LOOKED like $217, but if the person had bothered to READ, they would have seen "Forty-seven dollars and no/100" written as clear as day.

I am actually really scared of mistakes like this!

OMG! I don't know what I would do!

Lesson#1: Computers are only as error-free as the person operating them.
Lesson#2: Write your checks legibly!

I made a typing mistake many years ago that cost my company about $1 million dollars. I was utterly amazed that they took it so well but I appologized for years. Their explanation to me? We shouldn't have allowed you to have sole responsibility for what you were doing when 1) I just lost my dad to cancer and 2) was in the middle of a divorce proceeding. Just a wee bit distracted. They were right but I still kick myself over that one.

Wow! That's amazing that they didn't fire you. I'm really impressed that people were so decent about it.
