I just clipped Chanel's nails for the first time myself,
but some of them look frayed/split -- i did it while she was sleepy and she passed out again right after, so she seems fine, but will this cause her discomfort? ( I feel so bad, it looks like it would be uncomfortable
)

you can use those, but they're actually more difficult to work with than the pet ones. i used to use them, then bought a 'scissors' pet type & they cut much more cleanly. look here for a diagram that shows how to cut them. this is also the kind of clippers i got - i think they work really well.

As the cat sheds the outer layer of their claws they can get a frayed look if you cut teh nail. These outer layers are just being shed and its not a problem. Sometimes cats will chew them off or scrach them off (hence why cats need to scratch so much).
