The players -
Winkles, 14 year old cat. Mainly outdoors until she adopted us last year. She has always been loving, playful and every bit a lady.

Obi - 11 weeks old and cute as a button. She is playful, fun, and wants very much to play with her new big sister.

Since Obi came to live with us three weeks ago Winkles has not been wanting any part of it. She has been distant, retreating more outside and is acting like the kitten is a demon coming to claim her. We understand she's feeling like her place isn't hers anymore. She actually pouts! Her ears fold back, lip goes down eys near close, and she won't look at anyone. I've never seen anything like it!

I'm stumped. Just when I think Winkles is making progress she seems to stumble back. I realize that it's only been three weeks as of today but it's getting to be worrisome. She's taken to swatting at Dan and I today. I decided to put her in our room with the door closed to pet her and give her some alone time without the need to feel she must be on guard of kitten invasion. She seemed to appreciate it but decided to swat once again after a few minutes. Obi wants nothing but to play with her and isn't being submissive by Winkles attempts to be mistress of the household. Obi thinks the swats and hisses are a type of game. I wish there was something Dan and I could do to help Winkles come around but we're stumped. We've given her private attention, we've given her space. She always gets fed first and Obi is fed in a different area of the house a few seconds after. We have tried introducing her to a sleeping Obi. We have mostly been trying to let the pecking order play out. Winkles basically had a meltdown tonight, or a tantrum in toddler terms. As far as I can tell she did that is.

Help?

Back away and leave them be. They need to find their way with each other and they will. Until they do, just leave your Senior cat be or you may get worse than swatted.
