Ok I know I have heard about this before but I am not sure what to call it to look it up. It is disgusting. My cat Noira (female, spayed, healthy) tends to walk right in front of whatever I am doing and stop, blocking my view (of the book I am reading or whatever). So sometimes I will kinda pat the back of her hind legs to guide her out of the way. Well a couple times now that I have done that or something similar, she squirts a nasty beige liquid I guess, out of her, well, behind

Is this something to worry about? Why does it happen when I do that? I am really not touching near her butt, I am under it or it'll happen if I scratch her lower belly sometimes. Is she making that happen or is it natural. It is only a few drops, or squirts, that come out. I remember it has something to do with glands maybe but does this require a vet visit? She only does this at this particular time, I don't find this nasty stuff all over the out or anything. Oh and she uses the litterboxes fine, never had a problem with that.

She needs her anal glands expressed. A qualified pet groomer can do it, or a vet. You can do it yourself, ask the vet to show you, but it is not for the weak at heart-

Yeah it can be fairly common......The stuff in the anal sacks is used to mark territory....But as Domestic cats, they have no real reason to use it, and there for have in some cases lost the ability to empty it........

For most cats, passing stool provides the pressure to empty the sacs...However at times they do get clogged...and this can be painful for them, and retchingly disgusting for the human......Sometimes it gets soo bad that a vet visit is required and antibiotics are needed...

In some cases...when a cats sacs need to be emptied manually every couple of weeks the owner can opt to have a Anal Sacculectomy done which entails removing the sacs all together...which as far as I know is a reletively simple proceedure for any specialist of that field.......

And thats what I know about anal sacs.....

Ok thanks guys. Is this an emergency or can it wait until the weekend?
How do I go about asking the vet about it? Just say "hey vet, can you express my cats anal sacs?" haha, kind of a weird thing to talk about.

I don't think I would have any problem doing it myself, but is removing them only done in really bad cases or can it be done just if I want it to be so I don't have to deal with it? Oh and umm is there a word to call this liquid that is squirting out of her? sorry if I am grossing some people out! But I want to sound like I know what I am talking about when I call the vet...Usually you just talk to a receptionist who doesn't really know the details about things like this.

Oh and is she making this happen or can she not control when that liquid comes out? How does that relate to what I was doing to her when it happened?

I am sorry this is an incovienience for you....It is very smelly...

However you are going to have a hard time finding a vet who will do this procedure just because you want it....ecspecially since this type of surgery requires a specialist......

Just like humans, animals can have problems while under anesthesia..and because of that many vets wont do surgery for no reason......ecspecially since this is possibly a one time thing

As for your cat getting her anal glands impacted on purpose...well I doubt that...This is painful for her...so yeah

Just tell the receptionst that your cats anal glands need to be expressed....

Good luck...hope all goes well

Ok thanks, that is just what I was trying to find out, if the surgery should be done to prevent it or if it is a one time thing. It really isn't inconvienent, I mean, I would rather NOT have to squeeze out her sacs but I will do it if necessary.

Our neighbors little dog has this same problem from time to time...but not all the time...so hopefully your cat won`t either.

I had to do it once on our Cocker. That was IT!!! I couldn't handle the smell and it seemed to take forever to get out of my nose

won't try it again unless it's an EMERGENCY!!!
