Hi - I have a spayed mother cat (spayed about 3 weeks ago). Her babies (we have 3 of them) are 3 months and 1 week old, and they are still suckling. Is she producing any milk still or is it more of a comfort thing for the kitties?

Also, the babies are pretty big now, and she is a very small dainty little thing - is it ok for her to be nursing them, as she is also quite skinny and not gaining weight very fast (shes an ok weight, but we would like to see her a bit chubbier)

Thanks!

She can still lactate. There have been cases of cats becoming surrogate moms to orphaned kittens too. How old is the mom? You could feed her kitten food for a while longer if you're not already and that should beef her up some.

Yes, she will continue to produce milk as long as the kittens are still nursing.

She won't gain much weight as long as the kittens are nursing, but as long as she is not losing weight she's fine. She will start gaining as the kittens further decrease their nursing.

hi - we're not sure of exact age, but shes tiny so cant be much over a year old.

We are feeding her kitten food - I think its the only thing keeping her going as she is pretty exhausted from 3 months of looking after these critters!

Thanks!
