A friend of mine who is experiencing hard times, is asking me to sell a few Louis Vuitton purses/bags for her on eBay. I am doing research - but things still confuse me (a $30 bag is expensive to me!). For those of you who like designer bags - what do you look for in a bag?

I'm not quite sure what you mean....I don't have a Louis Vuitton, but I do have one Dooney and Burke. My mom bought it for me this past year for my 20th birthday and I love it. My bf thinks I'm incredibly stupid for using such an expensive purse. But what you have to realize is that the purse is very well-made and will last me a very long time! (Plus it matches everything!) If you mean what will people be looking for on ebay.....I would definately post pics, so people can see the condition of the bags. If they are fairly new, maybe say how long she's had them? Also give a round-a-bout size, because I'm not sure about most people, but I have to have a bag I can actually fit some stuff in! Good luck!

LOL, I meant if I spend $30 for a purse I think it is expensive - the purses are WAAAAAAY more expensive. I just don't understand why someone will pay that much. I can understand if they last a long time - but how can a one of these purses last that much longer under normal wear and tear?

I've done alot of research (ebay mainly) I just don't think she is going to sell them for what she wants for them (one she might it is really really rare) - true 2 of them do have original boxes and one has an authentic dust cover.

Still confused and not "getting it" ...

If they are authentic and you can proove that, people will pay a lot of money for them. If they are fake then it's too expensive. I have a LV purse that I bought when it just came out, because I totally loved it. I thought it was unique, but after seeing 15 year old girls with replicas of my purse. I just stopped carrying it. I think the reason to pay a lot for a purse is to have one of a kind. Smth unique that noone else has.

Definately authentic - she has the original receipts from Saks for two - one is from the LV in Paris.

I got to thinking about my recent obsession with shoes. I've been getting new ones off of eBay for good prices - one I paid $60 (I've never paid that much for shoes) but I could easily see myself buying another pair (in another color) at full price ($120). I have seen some Prada shoes going for over $300 - are they really that much well made - or is it the name?

When I buy a bag from ebay, the dust covers/boxes/cards it came with help a lot. Also mentioning what store they purchased it at and perhaps a receipt--I don't know why people would keep those, but they have been in several auctions in which the bag wasn't brand new! A few lines explaining why she is selling them would help also. It would make her seem real and not like a scammer.

I sold a Prada bag that I paid $500 for, for $100 on ebay. I didn't think I would get that much even, because people wouldn't know if it was real or not. How much is she expecting? Half? More than half? Well, good luck selling them and I hope she gets back on her feet soon!

If I understand it right, you are just wondering why someone would pay $500 for something you can get for $10 at Walmart.

Sure the quality is good, but when someone buys Prada or LV, I personally think it is to show that they can. They are just wired different than people like me, with 4 kids, and too many pets, that shop at Walmart and Target (pronounced Tar-shjay). Although I work with someone who does a good job of shopping at the dollar store one while carrying an expensive clutch!

I am currently carrying a $120 purse, and although it was more than 50% off I wouldn't have bought it except we were on a weekend trip, and my saddlebag purse strap broke off. I could not walk around for 2 days looking like a pauper! 1-1/2 years later, it is holding up pretty well, although it no longer looks new.

Hope your friend gets back on her feet soon!

Yes, they are well-made, but mostly it's the name. You can tell that with LV especially because on a lot of the stuff, the logo is all OVER the place.

It's a treat, a luxury, a pleasure, an indulgence and an appreciation for the finer things in life. It's like having someone come clean your home top to bottom to make it like new again, getting a specialty treatment at a spa, staying in a nice hotel just for the heck of it, eating an expensive meal, or getting your hair cut and styled once a year by someone who charges 5x what your normal stylist charges. It feels good.

Their quality is good, but they're not made of some magical material that never gets torn, scratched, or dirty. They are definitely better quality than something you'd get at Walmart, though.

I'm practical and I like practical gifts, but if someone walked in and handed me a nice bag, I would be
and
It appeals to the girly side and the womanly side all in one. Girly for the "OMG IT'S SO CUTE AND NICE!" and womanly for it's design, quality and sophistication.

It feels great. I would still want one if it didn't have a label anywhere on it. Most people don't know what a designer bag is anyway--at least where I live. I have pictures on my computer of bags I fell in love with but couldn't get. I just like to look at them. It's like art.

Exactly! My BF bought me a LV for my 30th b-day
I love handbags...I have one for basically any occasion.

I don't spend tons of $$ on clothes, b/c let's face it, clothes go in and out of style...plus at places like Gap and Banana Republic, they are on sale in 3 weeks anyway. I hate paying full price for stuff.

A nice piece of jewelry, watch, accessory, handbag, etc. Will last and when wearing something simple, a *splash* like that will make more of a splash than an expensive Chanel suit or whatever.

But I understand the practical side of people, I mean, I wouldn't want to spend tons of money on a Mercedes b/c I know I would have to finance it, and we actually DRIVE our car, so to spend money on something that depreciates in value...well, I don't like that!

But I figure one day I can give my daughter my LV bag...they're the oldest logo item in the world

As for your friend who wants to sell on ebay...I think anything guaranteeing it's authenticity will be helpful. My cousin wanted an LV for Christmas so my aunt told her "this is all you're getting" and bought the one she wanted off ebay (there was a significant cost savings, maybe like $100-150 or so)...well nothing *guaranteed* it's authneticity...my aunt was stuck with a bogus bag for like $300...my cousin is a bit spoiled and she FLIPPED!!!! But live and learn I guess. I know I would prefer buying the "real" stuff on non-Ebay related websites. Just me talkin'

I have real Coach purses and wallets that have held up really well. Of course I take good care of them also -cleaning with the coach products for instance. I also have alot of "fake" LV, Kate spade and others. I was just at a fake purse home party where we compared a real LV to a fake one. There is a hugh difference in the quality of the fakes-the ones at this party were really good quality.
She does need to be realistic on what price she is going to get-think of how much a luxury auto depreciates-its still worth alot but not like what you paid for it!!

That's exactly it! I love purses and have a great deal going with my fiance. I used to buy purses at Target at least once a month. I wanted a Dooney & Bourke purse sooooo bad. So he bought me the one I wanted for my birthday, and the deal? I don't buy a purse for the rest of the year and on my birthday I get a new one. I just got this one
http://store.dooney.com/OA_HTML/ibeC...?section=19663 in white for my birthday.

I don't spend a lot of money on clothes and such, this is the one thing I don't mind spending a lot of money on. It does make me feel good carrying it, and I get to carry it all year. I know some think it's silly, but I don't care, I love it!
