In my book, moggies trump purebred by far, but I realize that this is completely my own personal preference.
Ok, well we all know cats can't communicate with us. Right?
Seriously though, you know when your cats are happy and content and enjoying themselves, don't you?
I can tell you that our show cats enjoy riding in the car, staying at a motel and being at the show. They have a great time! How do I know this? Well, I know when my cats are happy. Of course bengals are more outgoing and curious than other breeds of cats, so maybe my experience isn't the model to go by.
However, I have been to many many cat shows and by and large all the cats seem to be content. Most of the judges handle the cats very gently and the cats appear at ease on the podium.
A takes a certain personality in a cat to be a show cat. By no means can the majority of cats be shown. As you mentioned your cats wouldn't like it. It's up to the breeder showing their cat to know whether the cat enjoys it or not. If he doesn't you don't show him again.
As I have said before, Moggies need homes too and there is absolutely nothing wrong with preferring them over a breed cat. I just feel there needs to be some tolerance from both sides. The fact is that breed cats not only come with certain set features, but they also come with distinct personality differences, that a person adopting may be counting on. Over the years I have talked quite a few people out of getting a bengal. These people came to me with the idea that these are beautiful animals that look like leopards and sit quietly on the couch all day. Wrong!
I also think the sad truth is that people only appreciate what they pay big bucks for. In my opinion people feel it's much easier to dump a free kitten/cat or one they only paid $50 for. If they paid $500, the animal has a much higher value to them.
The catch 22 here is, that most
people wouldn't pay $500 for a moggie when they can get a breed cat for that amount. This is the mentality that exists out there among pet owners.
I see posts here on the forum every week about someone with moggies asking for help with their pregnant female, or their litter of kittens. Why are these people allowing these cats to breed? They aren't legitimate breeders. What they are for the most part is irresponsible pet owners and it is they, that are the largest contributors to the population of kittens and cats that can't get a home. I don't think breeders should be constantly berated when we have these novices breeding their moggies for lame excuses, like: "I wanted my kids to see the miracle of birth".
