The cats house, we just pay the mortgage..
Hi all!
Just needed to post as Im sooo excited! We decided a few weeks ago to get a little friend for Sleeves as he's still so young and we feel terrible leaving him when we go out so we thought it was only fair.
I found out a lady at my work had a friend whos cat had kittens, so I called her last week and she says she's taking them to the vets today for 1 final check up then they will be ready!
We've already picked out a name for him/her - NISMO! what do you think? Mark picked it, its part of Nissan (cars...) they make all the performance parts and I actually agree with him that its mega cute.
Quite nervous about how Sleeves might be with a new face around but Im sure once he realises he can play/boss it around then he might quite enjoy it!!
I just phoned her and she says its fine to go round after work tonight!! Oooooh wow Im excited (can you tell??) but also so nervous. I dont want my baby being upset, or thinking he's being replaced...How did everyone else get on introducing new kittens in? How long before they begin to bond?
Thanks, Lauren x

Aww thanks Susan thats reassuring. One minute Im getting butterflies thinking about the 2 of them playing and having a new baby around then the next I'm feeling quite sick at the thought of Sleeves feeling left out, or resentful. He totally rules the roost and would hate him to feel jealous.
Im going to shut the new kitten in the living room tonight so Sleeves can still sleep with us (not that he'll sleep as he'll be trying to open the living room door all night). Also going to give them seperate food bowls, litters trays etc.
oooooooooh I feel.... I dont know!!!
I hope everyone knows what I mean?!?

As long as you do the introductions like what we show here you shouldn't have many problems, and the one tip i always give people is to always go and give the resident kitty lots of attention.

I used to go up to the guest room which is really Rosie and Sophies room every hour to sit and talk with Rosie, and to stroke her and tell her how much i love her just so she didn't feel left out.

Even now when it comes to feeding time or scritches when i get home Rosie gets them first.

How old is sleeves?

Sleeves is just over 6 months and still really playful, although he is calming down a bit. Im going to make sure he doesnt see us bringing the new one into the flat, or see it in 'his' carrier. As we're stuck for space its going to be hard to keep them apart for the recommended time, although I would love to do that... but yes Sleeves will still be Top Cat and I'll take him away and give him cuddles and make a fuss of him loads.

How exciting......(I`m a feelin it for ya!)
People on here suggest keeping the cats seperate for several days and exchanging their smells with each other. Look under the behavior forum for something like "Introducing new cats".
I did`nt know anything about doing it that way and pretty much just brought the new kitten in from the vets and plopped him down. There was quite a bit of hissing and sulking for about 3 days, then a couple attempts at #1 kitty grabbing #2 kitty by the back of the neck and sort of mounting him (like a male would a female) to show his dominance (#2 kitty just cried out a few times then held still like "no big deal...I did`nt want to be boss anyhow") and that was it! They started to play and have been BEST BUDS ever since. I think the acceptance of each other went easily because, in the first place they were both still kittens (about 6 months old) and the fact that #2 had come from a group of about 20 cats...so he was used to having someone else around.
I hope that yours do equally well....keep us posted!

Awww 6 months he's still a baby so it should be perfect!
But don't worry if he gives the kitten a bop on the head now and again because Rosie did that with Sophie many times and i panicked but was told to just leave her as she was only showing who was alpha.

Can't wait to see pictures of the new arrival now

Oh how exciting for you!!
I'm sure Sleeves will love having a play mate!!

I'm still in the processes of working through Willow's arrival - we're doing pretty well, but pecking order is still being established!! I'm sure yours will go really well, as Sleeves is still a baby!

I can't wait to see pictures of your new baby!!

RosieMac! What a beautiful little storybook you made there! I just love it. And your kitties are precious, and your house looks just lovely. Thank you so much for sharing that sweet little tale!

Thanks, Lauren x
it took Pixel & Cable quite a long time to really 'bond' - i.e. washing each other, sleeping together - about 6 months. but Pixel was 7 years old. on the other hand, i got Java when Cable was about 8 months old, & Java was 3 1/2 months old - & they got on beautifully, playing together, sleeping together, almost from the first day. kittens adapt faster than grown cats.

Congratulations on your new addition! I'm so happy for you.
Since Sleeves is still so young himself you shouldn't have any problem with them bonding. I've introduced my own cats at much older ages and have had to take things slowly, but they've worked things out with time. Good luck!

I think Sleeves is still young enough that they will bond quite nicely.

While all of my cats get along, they don't snuggle. But then we have the combination that most people say won't work (three females). I introduced Lucy as a kitten to Much who was 10 at the time. They will wrestle and Lucy will groom Much at dinner time. We introduced Carly last February. She's 3 and Lucy is 2 1/2. Lucy and Carly will chase one another and Lucy likes to go up and whack Carly.

I think as long as you take the introductions slowly, you will do fine. I'm excited for you. Kittens are so cute.

Age difference does make a difference... Kandie was 16 when we brought Zoey ( about 8 months then) home... they arent snuggle buddies but the play chase when Kandie permits... Zoey is very bonded to her sister Gigi a yorkie
