My kittens have opened their eyes and are starting to be slightly more active. When is a good time to make the nesting box so that they can get out and wander around the room a little. Right now they are like about a week and a half. The box they are in right now has 7 inch walls on it and the kittens are strong enough or big enough to get out. Should I shorten a side to about 3 or 4 inches or wait like another week or so???

If they've only just opened their eyes, they need to be in the nest for a bit longer, especially so they can stay warm as, at this stage, they will have trouble maintaining their own body temperature. Are the kittens with mum-cat or being hand-raised? If they're with mumcat, she will keep and eye on them and retrieve any escapees. If they're being hand-raised, you need to keep them in a box that they cannot get out of. That way, short play sessions on a clean floor (when they're at least 3 weeks old) can be determined by you and you don't run the risk of escapee kittens becoming chilled or lost.

I kept mine in a tokeyo cage where mom could leave any time, but the kits couldn't till they were big enough to get over the door. That was about 3-4 weeks old. Problem was they'd get out but still too little to climb back in.

By the time they were about 6-8 weeks old they could get in and out of the cage by themselves.
