Yea the thought did cross my mind. I may do that if this 'feline ovulation device' doesn't work well. Or like you said, just from time to time
Thanks everyone

So I think i'll attempt that first lol
I don't agree with that. I think the vet is not taking into account that your girl is not being bred when she does go into heat. If a cat is bred when she goes into heat-yes then the chance is low. But if she's not bred then the chance is much, much higher! I'd get a second opinion and ask specific questions.
I've never heard of that device but i'll have to check that out! It sounds interesting.

I agree. From what I've seen on the breeders association its sooo common. Breeders don't take chances if they skip a few heats, some breeders claim its a guaranteed infection.

Wasn't she referring to a q-tip? Maybe I missed something reading through teh threads

No the Q-tipping is what I mentioned. She says her vet says that you can get some sort of contraceptive from petco.

I would highly, highly doubt that you can get an effective and safe contraceptive from Petco considering that you cannot even get a safe and effective flea or worm treatment from Petco.

I agree with the others. You need a second opinion, and again, a consultation with a cardiologist so you know exactly what the situation is with her heart. Right now all you know is that there is a murmur which is a symptom, not a disease.

It's not a contraceptive at all. What it is is a ovulation device. When the cat goes into heat it used to cause the cat to ovulate which will reduce her heat to a few days instead of a week and it will reduce her chances of getting pyo. I really can't afford a cardiologist (poor college student) and I don't think he's going to be able to tell me much other than exactly what is going on with her heart, he's not going to be able to do anything about it. I don't want people to start bashing me about not being a good owner, because I am and never hesitate to bring my pets to the vet but I just don't think that's the best option for me or her.

We do have one on campus which is were I've been bringing my pets. I did ask about it and they basically don't cut any deals. They've got such a huge supply of work that it doesn't matter much to them :-/

well the ovulation thing is worth a try. I don't think because money is tight your a bad owner. If that were the case at one point in just about everyone's life the'd be a bad pet owner.

Throw your boyfriend's mum into walls. That'll teach her not to throw cats into them!

No violence here. It wasn't the boyfriends mom it was the mom's boyfriend.

You know...sometimes people who can`t be put under for some reason or other, have to have surgery...and they do it under a local.
Is there anyway this kitty could be mildly sedated enough (without really heavy drugs) so that she would be still, and then just numbed to be spayed?????
I`m not suggesting that i have heard of it...but I`m just wondering.

No it's a great suggestion and I did ask the vet about it and basically this is what he said... The biggest problem for my kitty's heart is most likely going to be stress. He said that when you only mildly sedate them it actually stresses their bodies out more, not because they can feel it but because they still have their bodies sending signals which can stress her out more. So that may be an option but she still may very possibly die :-/ I asked if being in heat was just as stressfull as a reduced anestisia spay and he said that that's possible too. So it's a really hard decision to make without having her be able to tell me how she's feeling

How often is she coming into heat and how long does it last?

You know she will not last a long time (years wise) either way. If the heart problem doesn't get her, the cancer will from not being spayed. Maybe if its not too bad to tolerate, just make her comfortable for as long as she does live. And I think at the first sign of cancer, I'd make the decision to put her to sleep, but you do what you feel best.

I hope the next kitty you adopt has far less medical problems - spay or neuter then right away if you can.

Please do let us know if you get to the point of trying to have her spade. there are a lot of us on here that would like to be praying for her.
I`m praying about her little heart already and I hope that you are able to find a solution for her.
By the way...what is her name????

She comes into heat every 2 weeks or so and it usually lasts 5-7 days (which I may be able to shorten with the ovulation device). And exactly like you said, no matter what I do I've already accepted she won't live very long so instead of fixing her and hoping it works I can at least keep her comfortable until it's her time to go. At least this way I'm already prepared to make that decision someday.

I did adopt 2 more kitties recently and they were both spayed before I even brought them home. One of the first things I asked about was if they had heart murmurs too. I have had a slew of bad luck with animals. One dog I had died after being fixed from a liver shunt, another dog displaced her back legs and had to be put to sleep, another cat died of unknown causes (possibly eating something poisenous) all within a 2-3 year time period. Then I took in this kitty with her heart murmur and after adopting the new kitties one of them broke his leg and almost died from unknown causes too. So it may be while before I adopt any more animals, seems it's not meant to be!
