There's no harm advertising in the newspaper. A responsible person looking to buy a pet from a newspaper ad, will call up, talk to the breeder/person who placed the ad and then make an appointment to visit the kitten.
It's up to the buyer to investigate thoroughly.
The newspaper is just another form of advertising. Just like a website, online classifieds, posting a sign at the vet's office, etc.

I would PM Gaye about questions to ask the breeder.

Applehead siamese are just the old style siamese - its a purebred, maybe and probably doesn't have any papers. I would only pay around $50 for one. If the person wants more then that, pass it by.

I'd also ask the age, if the kittens had any shots, and to see the parents. BTW Siamese kittens should not go to new home under the age of 12 weeks - they need more socialization from littermates then other type of cats.

Wow, pretty judgemental. So in your opinion the kittens are nearly worthless.
You know nothing of the ad in the paper, yet automatically assume there are no papers.
BTW....no breed of cat should leave home, mom and siblings prior to 12 weeks, not just siamese.

I like the look of traditional siamese. Though the classic style is growing on me. Originally I fell in love with Tonkinese because I though the look wasn't as extreme. Going to cat shows though I'm actually starting to like a lot of looks I never was fond of before, particularly like the cornish rex and the classic siamese and other orientals.

Ours leave between 10 and 12 weeks.

I guess it's kinda like some people breed the longer nosed Persians and we sell them for less then our short nosed ones, that GK was talking about. I would always expect to pay less for a kitten that doesn't meet the current standard then one that does.

I thought traditional siamese were still accepted? Wow I just looked it up and it looks like they are only still accepted for show in the UFO. I didn't know that. I do think that is why the Tonkinese has become popular though... It takes some of the extreme out of modern siamese.

well you can show and register whatever siamese you want. From my understanding the UFO is a very small organisation - formed not too long ago.
I definitly don't agree with the way their judges are taught.

Of course 12 weeks is the minimum here - kittens need that time to learn eberything they need to from their mama. A kitten who leaves earlier can develop probs - tho some do OK, some have no choice obviously if they are bottle babies for example.

$50 for an Applehead Siamese if the kitty is a purebred with papers is ridiculous and to be polite, I would suggest whoever wrote that does not understand the history of this beautiful breed. There will always be ppl who prefer wedgies over Appleheads and so forth - the debate does on as we all know - but please do not denegrate this wonerful cat!!!!! All things being equal and assuming this is a reputable breeder, Applehead Siamese are worth much more than $50!!!!!!

As someone who spent nearly 3 years searching for CFA-registered Old-Style Siamese cats which were of suitable ancestry to breed, I can tell you beyond any doubt that 1) they are rare and 2) they are fast approaching extinction. IF an Old-Style Siamese is registered with CFA, they ~must~ possess at least eight generations of cats who are also registered/registerable with CFA as Siamese. Finding Old-Style Siamese cats who don't have Colorpoints in their recent past ancestry is next to impossible.

TICA and ACA (I think, perhaps ACFA as well) register Colorpoints as Siamese. CFA allows only Siamese cats with at least 8 gens of other Siamese cats who are Seal, Blue, Chocolate or Lilac Points to be registered as Siamese. Call me a purist if you will, but I agree with them and will continue to support this.

Thanks for that info! I've always liked both types but I've only owned the old-style and I must say they have wonderful dispositions! I absolutely loved the ones I had.
