I brought Brody (the dog we found outside on Thanksgiving without a home) to the vet this morning for a check up and vaccines. I found out that he is about 2 years old and is a Bullnese. The cloudiness in his eye was not from a cataract as I originally thought but from a punture wound that went untreated. It all ready healed as well as it could and unfortunately Brody has lost most of his vision in that eye.

It gets worse though, Brody has a bad case of heart worms. He is all ready coughing from them.
I thought he must have had a cold, I never suspected heart worms since I don't know much about them. My vet taught me alot about them today though. Since Brody received 4 vaccines today we can't begin heart worm treatment for 2 weeks. I will then drop him off to spend a day at the vets office so he can get his first treatment. Then he will be on Heartguard for a 6 month period. This will help weaken the worms and make the final 2 treatments in June more efective. Heartworms can be fatal for a dog and the treatments can be dangerous as well. It is also very expensive, but my vet is helping me out by not charging me for the 1st treatment or the tests he will get that day. I will only have to pay for the 6 months of Heartguard, and then for the procedure in June. I was so thankful to him for this because it has been tough financially to get everything situated with Brody. We didn't plan for him, he just showed up.
I aske dmy vets opinion about Brody's situation and what he thought of his previous owners. He said he could say with certainity that Brody has not been properly cared for and that he thinks he went searching for a good home on his own where he would be cared for. Brody stole my heart today and I felt a sense of certainty that I had made the right decision in keeping him.
Please keep Brody in your prayers that he are able to get rid of those nasty worms and that in 6 months he is a happy and healthy pup.

and what a wonderful home he discovered
I am so sorry that Brody was mistreated, but I do hope that from now on his life improves.
What a wonderful vet you have Tanya... I can only imagine how a new pet just turning up could put a strain on the finances, but you did what you had to do without question and that just shows what a wonderful beautiful person you are

good luck Brody - stay strong little one, fight those nasty horrible worms... you now have a new, exciting and a loving life to look forward to - you dont want to miss out on that little one

(((((healthy vibes sent your way from across the ocean))))))

Oh my gosh, poor Brody! He certainly does NOT deserve those stupid worms after all he's already been through. But he is strong, I'm sure, having been abused like that; he will pull through this. And so will you.
Don't get yourself down about it too much. If you worry too much, Brody will, too. And so will we!

What an awful shock for you
I am so sorry you got into the middle of the neglect caused by the previous owners. Sending you wishes for great strength and prayers for Brody. No one could be better for him than to have you there coaching him along.

Tanya...sweet Brody is so fortunate that you are now his loving Mommy.
It sounds like you both have quite a battle ahead.
If anyone can help him get though this...it's you.

I will keep both of you in my prayers.

Heart worms are serious, but not necessarily fatal. An acquaintance's Collie recently died of heart failure at 14 years of age , but he contracted heart worms at 2 years of age, and was treated successfully. There's obviously not much you can do about Brody's eyesight at this point, but that's a minor matter, since sense of smell and hearing are much more acute in dogs. I hate to say this, but I think fate determined that Brody should end up with you, so you'll probably have to grin and bear it. He's going to turn you into a "dog and cat person", and he and Dori will be fast friends. Just watch!

Thank you so much everyone, we really appreciate all of your kind words so very much.
I still won't admit to being a "dog person", but Brody has inched his way into my life.

I feel so terrible for him and wish I could just make those worms disappear. I am so worried about the treatments he has to go through. It's so scary to begin to really care about an animal and then get news like this so soon. I was reading up on heartworms and found that the treatment is sucessful almost 95% of the time. Those are good odds. I do think Brody was meant to be with us, how else would a dog get dropped off at my door at Thanksgiving? I won't believe that he made it to me only to be taken away so soon. He will make it through just fine, I will make sure of it.

Sending lots of healthy and strength vibes to little Brody, and some extra strength vibes to you Tanya! I think, too, that Brody was meant to be with you, with someone who will care for him and love him like his previous "owners" never did.
