I brought Brody (the dog we found outside on Thanksgiving without a home) to the vet this morning for a check up and vaccines. I found out that he is about 2 years old and is a Bullnese. The cloudiness in his eye was not from a cataract as I originally thought but from a punture wound that went untreated. It all ready healed as well as it could and unfortunately Brody has lost most of his vision in that eye.
It gets worse though, Brody has a bad case of heart worms. He is all ready coughing from them.
I thought he must have had a cold, I never suspected heart worms since I don't know much about them. My vet taught me alot about them today though. Since Brody received 4 vaccines today we can't begin heart worm treatment for 2 weeks. I will then drop him off to spend a day at the vets office so he can get his first treatment. Then he will be on Heartguard for a 6 month period. This will help weaken the worms and make the final 2 treatments in June more efective. Heartworms can be fatal for a dog and the treatments can be dangerous as well. It is also very expensive, but my vet is helping me out by not charging me for the 1st treatment or the tests he will get that day. I will only have to pay for the 6 months of Heartguard, and then for the procedure in June. I was so thankful to him for this because it has been tough financially to get everything situated with Brody. We didn't plan for him, he just showed up.
I aske dmy vets opinion about Brody's situation and what he thought of his previous owners. He said he could say with certainity that Brody has not been properly cared for and that he thinks he went searching for a good home on his own where he would be cared for. Brody stole my heart today and I felt a sense of certainty that I had made the right decision in keeping him.
Please keep Brody in your prayers that he are able to get rid of those nasty worms and that in 6 months he is a happy and healthy pup.
