I was going to get my cat Sozo spayed this week, but she has been in heat this past 3 days or so. Can it be done? Also she is still feeding Pubah... and he was 8 weeks this past saturday. If she is spayed will her milk stop producing?

Thanx

She can be spayed...it may cost a little more, but many vets can spay a cat in heat. As far as the milk....I found this online:

Q: Is it safe to spay a nursing mom-cat?

A: Yes. The surgery will not affect her milk production.

Well who said that? Can you provide a website? I mean, anyone could have written and posted that.

She can be spayed although there is always a little more risk when they are in heat. This is more true for dogs than cats. As TNR said spaying her will not affect milk production. She will continue to lactate as long as her kitten is still feeding.

Thanks for posting this. I knew there was a slightly greater risk when spaying a cat in heat...but I wasn't sure if it was more for dogs than cats.

It is up to the vet. Some will not do it because the blood vessels are larger when a cat is in heat and they would rather wait. But call your vet and find out the policy. Whatever you do, keep your cat inside.

Yes, it can be done. As earlier posters have said there is a somewhat greater chance of bleeding because of the extra blood going to the uterus, but I have seen lots of cats spayed while in heat and have actually never seen a problem as a result. Sometimes the vet charges a little extra, though (usually $20 or less) to compensate for the slightly more time consuming surgery. It's worth it, though, because if you don't spay a cat while she is in heat then you may end up spaying her when she is pregnant.
