I am buying Christmas gifts for my sweetie's boss's kids, girl 11, boy 16. I know he has an interest in hunting and fishing, I have not a clue about the girl. I also have the boss's wife, and a coworker's husband to buy for. Any suggestions would be great. Ther is no real rule about cost, but we usually keep it at the 20-25 dollar range.

There are so many artsy-craftsy things out there - faux stained glass, stamp art, etc. That age group usually loves to create things.

I'm a big believer in books. There are such terrific books out there for young people -- one series I love is full of cross-section illustrations of ships, planes, skyscrapers, all sorts of fascinating things.

Kits are great, too. There are kits for growing crystals, kits for tumbling rocks into gemstones, kits for building a miniature greenhouse and planting it with herbs. A few years ago, I found an archaeology kit that was just great -- blocks of mud with tools to carefully excavate the reproduced treasures inside. Some of the treasures were broken bits of Egyptian heiroglyphs, some were dinosaur bones, some were cavepaintings you could "restore" with paints provided... what fun!

Kids are exposed to the latest electronic gadgets all day, every day... I like to give them low-tech gifts that require them to think and imagine.

Gift certificate to Target for the girl, and one to Gander Mountain or Sportsman's warehouse would be perfect. It's hard with kids that age, they never like anything we pick out!

You may also want to give them candy, too, to go along with their gifts. Just to be on the safe side, you know, in case they don't like what you get them. The candy would make up for it. Just about everybody loves candy, you can't go wrong with it!

That is what I was thinking of suggesting for the boy. If the little girl likes to read or go see movies, you could get her a gift card to Borders or a local theatre.

Those are great ideas, Rigel. My 10 y/o is very into board games right now. She loves Twister, Twister Moves, Monopoly, Risk and Sorry.

My 10 y/o dd suggests art supplies, like colored pencils and pretty papers. Also those blank books, for journalling. A couple of her friends are writing books.

My 16 y/o ds suggests Mesmerize (a CD) by System of a Down. Its metal and rock, the one song he has heard from it is "awesome". Of course, the song he likes is called BYOB. But kids that age really like music, and if you get a CD from Target or K-mart, you can include a gift receipt which doesn't show the cost, but he can return it if he already has it.

I also agree with the "artsy" stuff, they have so much art stuff for kids that age (the girl). And it's all very cool. Messy, but cool. I could even play with some of them.

The boy...Maybe a video game (do you know if he has a video game system?, or even a computer?) because they have fishing, and hunting games out there for like 15-20 bucks. That's what I would do.

I agree with the Gander Mountain gift card, I just absolutely love that store, all the men in my life are total 100% hunting men so whenever its Christmas time, I head to Gander Mountain and get their gift cards, shirts (they have really great shirts!) hunting gear, whatever!

I also agree with Target, that store is great too, especially for girls, they have clothes, decorating stuff for girly rooms, scrapbooking things (maybe she's into that?) Gift cards are such a great way to go!
