I took her to the vet yesterday to get her shots and to see what the third eyelid thing and her cough was. He felt that it was a cold. She has been acting normal up to that point. However, yesterday she slept all day and won't eat or drink. She wounldn't even eat canned cat food and she loves that stuff. She also doesn't want attention and wants to be left alone. What should I do?

If she has a cold, she may not be able to smell her food, which could explain why she isn't eating. It is important that you get her to eat though, cats can have liver probs after a few days of not eating. If she can't smell it, you will have to make it tempting for her, i.e. warming it up, adding strong smelling liquids. It is very important.

What kinds of liquids could I add? I put the can in front of her and she looks at it- almost like she wants to eat it but she doesn't. Also she feels warm. I have not taken her temp.

have your tried calling your Vet? If not Please call him now or your nearest emergency vet.

Also you can add either chicken broth (no salt), Pedialite (sp?) no flavor, etc.

I can`t hardly believe that your vet would make a recommendation like that!Asprin is poisonous to cats.I wonder why he would do that?
What kind of shots did your kitty get yesterday...antibiotics or reg immunizations?
It is my understanding that if the cat has a cold then antibiotics won`t help as a cold is a virus.
If it is an URI then that is an infection and the cat would probably need antibotics.
Reg immunizations should NOT be given to a cat that is already sick.
I hope that Lucky will be better soon. Keep some liquids going and keep trying to get him to eat something....and do let us know how he is doing.

I gave her the aspirin it is only 81mg and she is much better now. She got her regular immunizations yesterday.

Be careful with that aspirin, even though the vet told you to give it ... Cats metabolize aspirin extremely slowly and require a very low dose and a typical dosing schedule of twice a week usage. Any more than that can result in overdose which in the cat is a life-threatening situation. If you notice any swelling, especially around the head/neck area or if your cat seems to be having trouble breathing, get in the car and go straight to the Vet ER.

I agree with Gaye, and although baby aspirin is used in rare instances by vets, there are better alternatives out there for your cat. Please keep a careful eye on her-

I only gave her the one tablet. She is up and eats. She wants attention too. However, her nose is still a little warm, but I think that is due to the cold the ver thought she had. I just don't know why he would tell me to give her aspirin when it is that bad for cats.

If I've learned anything by reading this board, it's that there are a lot of vets out there who have no idea what they're doing...and there are also some who are brilliant, but whose approaches are in opposition to accepted wisdom in the field. Sometimes it's hard to tell which is which.

In any case, I vote for no more aspirin too. Scary.

By the way, another liquid you could add to her food is warmed-up KMR, Kitten Milk Replacer. I'm always promoting this stuff on the board -- I should get a kickback from the company! But it's so good for them, and they really love it.

Good luck with your little one...
