Hello All!

I've been looking all over the internet for an answer to my cat's odd but not bothersome behavior. To give you some details, my female tabby cat (PC) is a completely indoor cat, spayed, declawed (all 4 paws), around 11-years-old, and has been with us since she was around 8-weeks-old. For the past 8 years we had a second female cat (Maggie) with basically the same creditials as the older cat. Unfortuately, she had a serious urination problem that got to be quite a burden and we had to give her away (to someone with time to devote to her, no second cat, and no leather couches!).

PC and Maggie never really got along and so when Maggie was given away, PC took full control of the house again. When Maggie was with us, PC kind of stuck to herself or to me when I was home (I'm in college away from home). Now, she is a very lovable cat who follows us from room to room, meowing and purring like crazy. She always needs to be on our laps when we are sitting and curled around our feet when we are standing. She has always been like this to me, but not to my parents or my brother. Now, she is ultra loving to anyone.

The behavior that I'm curious about is something that she has done with me for years while I am laying in bed reading before I fall asleep. Now she is showing everyone. Here it is: she will back into something-the couch, the wall, the headboard on the bed, etc-and twitch her tail very quickly just at the base. When her tail is shaking it looks like it would if she was severely cold and shaking almost violently to keep herself warm. Sometimes she will move her back legs up and and down, one then the other, while she is wiggling her tail, but the rest of her is always very stiff. If you touch her, she'll continue.

Does this happen to anyone else? Anyone know what this means?

Thanks, cat lovers!!

Ash

I don't know what to say about the tail twitching...perhaps she's developed some sort of problem with the anal glands and is trying to alleviate the pain. I'd ask the vet.

But your other kitty... I can tell you why she had litterbox issues: because she was declawed. That very often happens with cats whose toejoints have been amputated this way, and many of them have permanent personality changes as well. Please, please don't declaw any future kitties!

Are you sure she's a female - (I'm sure she is, but...) it sounds just like what male cats do when they're spraying something!

We can this "jiggly tail kitty." Cats will often do this when they are extremely happy about something. One of my cats does jiggly tail kitty when we come home from work and at supper time, or when we are cooking something that smells extra yummy to her. It is a sign of pure joy.

As Larke said, this is also what it looks like when a cat sprays, but as long as there is no urine coming out, it is joy rather than marking.

So...just enjoy your happy little kitty!

Wow! I've NEVER heard of that! Thanks for educating us...

And now I have a new goal: to make my kitties jiggle their tails. :-)

My Female tabby does it also, she does look like a male that sprays but she never does that, usually when I am getting ready to groom her, I think it's because she is happy also, but you might want to have her glands checked also.

When we firt brought our new kitten home she would twich her tail like that and it seemed as though she was either nervous, excited or happy. She doesn't back up to anything to do it, her tail just starts to shake, its the cutest thing!
