A few days ago ol' Russell was standing behind Andrea at all costs, and now he's drawing up the divorce papers?

Too bad the rubber room didn't come in a size big enough for 2. There is something seriously wrong with him, as well. It took more than just her to weave the little life they had built. He gets to walk away because he wasn't "the one".

"The leaflets said women have a biblical duty to endure natural childbirth as a "humbling" rite of passage. Andrea Yates gave birth to all five of her children without the aid of medication. "

As a woman who chose natural childbirth, I object to the way the idea of humbling (humiliating?) women is juxtaposed with medicated childbirth. Western medical practices often treat pregnancy and birth as a pathological condition of some kind, when in contrast to that a woman's body designed to carry a child and bring it forth into the world. Only in a few cases is medical intervention a necessity (though it is often a preference). These two sentences together give the impression that a woman who "gives birth without the aid of medication" is somehow oppressed. More accurately, it should be a decision between the mother and her care provider.

Which is not to say it was the case for Andrea Yates, who was in a particular kind of situation (emotionally abusive) and was at least influenced in making the decision.

Imagyne, I said exactly what you said in one of the earlier threads. I think she should be put to death in the same manner as she killed her children. I know, I know, its not a popular opinion, but that is exactly how I feel. This case makes me sooooo anygry, I lose all perspectives as to what is morally and legally correct. Sorry.

He has shown no emotion, he is like stone. I don't understand it. My husband would be in a mental facility, he would be losing his mind if anything ever happened to me or the kids. He damn sure would not be holding press conferences the day of the killings! I knew from the beginning he was a jacka** and I still think that now.

Hey, Deb25, is he really drawing up divorce papers??? OMG, what a frieking hypocrite he is! I just saw him say the day she was sentenced, that he'd be spending the next 40 years visiting his wife daily!!!!!!!!!! oh, he makes me so angry I see RED!

No she is not pregnant, they ruled that out as soon as they could! I think that Russell should be "altered" in order to prevent him from spreading his seed.

Russell Yates has court date of his own - and misses it
By MARY FLOOD
Copyright 2002 Houston Chronicle
The one day Russell Yates was legally obliged to be in the Harris County Courthouse complex, he wasn't. He skipped jury duty Monday.

The husband of Andrea Pia Yates, sentenced to life in prison for capital murder in the drowning of her five children, was in New York City to appear on the Today Show in the morning. He flew cross-country to do Larry King Live in the evening.

In doing so, Yates missed his wife's formal sentencing Monday morning and his 12:15 p.m. jury call.

"We saw him all over TV the last day or so, so we know he's preoccupied," said Harris County District Clerk Charles Bacarisse, whose office oversees the jury selection process.

"Sadly, a lot of citizens in our county miss jury duty. It's always unfortunate, but in this case it's unfortunate and ironic. It's completely bizarre."

Yates, contacted in Los Angeles as he prepared for the King show, said he remembered seeing a jury summons but it slipped his mind.

"I've got piles of papers at home," he said. "I'm lucky I have the electricity on, I've been so busy."

Until Monday, he had been a courthouse regular for months. His wife's trial began in full Feb. 18, after weeks of jury selection.

There can be penalties for skipping jury duty. But the county seldom hunts people down. Bacarisse said Yates, like any citizen who misses jury duty, can call the county and get a date reset. Yates asked the Chronicle for Bacarisse's phone number Monday.

"What's more bizarre is that about three months ago, I got a jury summons for Andrea, too," Yates said.

Bacarisse said they figured out why Andrea Yates, incarcerated since her arrest in June, hadn't made it to the jury room.

Funny how he's real supportive of the system to get his wife off for murdering his children, but can't make it to jury duty because he has a TV appearance. Another example of his selfishness.

geez, reading some of the court transcripts, it shows the pathologist testified that the kids were unconcious but alive when pulled from the tub by her. It took them 7 minutes for their hearts to quit beating........

I just know there's a special place in heaven for those children - and others like them (they aren't the only ones, more's the pity).

It just killed me that he "was in New York City to appear on the Today Show in the morning. He flew cross-country to do Larry King Live in the evening. In doing so, Yates missed his wife's formal sentencing Monday morning and his 12:15 p.m. jury call." Can't even make it to her sentencing. He's already got those divorce papers filled out, I'm sure. Jerk.

Is it possible to bend the rules and make the penalty for missing jury duty "life with no parole for 40 years" just this once?

I am in no way condoning what Andrea did, but I think her husband is out on the same ledge somewhere.

BTW, hissy, read the book version of "The Perfect Storm". It chronicles in detail just how long and agonizing a death by drowning is.

I still say they impose automatic 'spay/neuter' for people like those two. We don't need any more of their gene pool carried on in this society..
