I am feeding my cats a quarter can of this each as a treat every day and was wondering if the ingredient list is ok.

chicken, chicken broth, chicken liver, chicken by-products, ocean fish, brewers rice, egg product, guar gum, salt, potassium chloride, brewers dried yeast, choline chloride, vitamins (huge list), minerals (list) and taurine.

I realize that the by-products are bad, what about the other stuff? I am switching them onto Innova Evo dry for the rest of the day. Seems to be going ok so far. My little one has Coccidia and is on medicine right now so I'm trying give them the best food I can afford. The canned stuff is cheapish but helps me give him his pill and the Evo is high quality from what I've read.

By the way, the PC cat food is Canadian so that is probably why you haven't heard of it.

A word to the wise- several cats have problems with the Evo and not being able to absorb all of the nutrients. This, of course, leads to digestive upset and commonly, diarreha. I don't know how this would affect the coccidia treatment.

It's a high quality food, sure, but just know that I know a lot of people who have not had great luck with it. Some have, though, but just keep that in mind

Except for the by-products, this sounds like a very decent cat food - not full of grains (don't mind seeing one -rice, it's the ones with the wheat flour, soy flour, barley, rice all in one formula!), no corn, no animal digest, no dyes or bha/bht (from what you've listed). Not bad

Thanks for the replies! I am aware that they may have trouble with the Evo and am keeping on eye on things. I've only switched half their food so far with the Evo and its going ok. The kitten with the coccidia never got horrible diarrhea, but has soft stool. I'm hoping it will firm up soon, he has been on the medicine for a week out of the twenty days. I'm actually hoping that the Evo will help things along. The 11 month old cat is doing fine and taking to the Evo well.

Those ingredients sound pretty good to me. I shop at a Jewel store, and their high end store brand is President's Choice. I may check it out next time, because they do love a treat of canned food at times!

Beckiboo, you have to get the President's Choice Nutrition 1st one. PC also has lower end cat foods that you want to avoid. The are full of grains and bad protien sources. Also, it might not be the same as I'm talking about since I'm sure that PC is a Canadian brand.

From what I remember of the presidents choice food when mom brought it home once, it was pretty gross...I don't remember what the back of the can said...I just remember it being kind of gooby looking (technical term) and a strange shade of dark brown. I guess I judge canned food by perception sometimes. Though, I tried Iams kitten once and would never go back...smelt burnt!
I've also been told by a few people that Iams their food of choice, so I say, if you can get passed the sensory stuff and the by-products go for it!

I go to Pet Valu for my cat food. They have a number of different brands with no by-products. Currently the kits are really liking Merrick's but it is a hefty $1.69 per can. I don't really mind myself - I just ordered 3 cases (one case in each flavour that they like).

I figure if I went to Tim Horton's every day for a coffee and muffin which I know some folks do, and I don't because I'm one of the few who don't like their coffee nor their donuts, I would spend more than $3.38 per day, so the kitties are worth it.

They have several other brands with no by-products as well so I just bought some of each and tried them out until I found the one they liked.

The aafco definition (I believe) is: "material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice and shall be suitable for animal feed. "

In other words, yuck.

I think it's okay. By-products aren't ideal but by-products identified by specific animal (like the chicken by-products listed here) are not bad.

I personally won't feed anything with by-products since I have absolutely no idea what those by-products contain.

YUCK! Now I know why I made my decision not to feed by-products.

Hi Tourmaline,

The Presidents Choice wet food that I could find on the web didn't have those ingredients listed on your post. What is the specific name of the food? The ones I found (PC 1st, PC Gourmet, & PC Finicky) had meat by-products and wheat gluten. Chicken by-products are OK as cats in nature eat those parts of birds, but "meat" by-products means they are not telling you what kind of animal they are using.

I have cats who will eat fresh organs and if that is what a by product was/is I wouldnt mind but these are fresh organs head and feet are the items 99% of all cats leave and most only eat a few organs...

Hi, The ingredients listed on the web are not the same thats listed on the can. I'm guessing that they haven't updated the web for some reason if they've changed the ingredients. I trust that the ingredients that are on the can (what I typed up at the beginning) is what is in the food. The food is called Presidents Choice Nutrition 1st. There is a 1-800 number if you want to call them to question the web ingredient list. It is 1-800-495-5111.

Yes, it sounds like they changed the ingredients. The ingredients on the can, compare to others I've read, are pretty good! All that chicken is great. My concern is watching out for salt being high on the list of ingredients. And I'm not sure how I feel yet about yeast in the food, that's a personal preference at this point. For me, I had bought nutrituional yeast in the past, and then threw it out when I read another nutritionist's argument against putting yeast in the body.

Questions: is "ocean fish" the name of the fish (I've seen it in many brands), generic? What is "egg product"?

And lastly, the list of vitamins, minerals and taurine, if it's chelated from a natural product then it's higher quality than if it's a synthetic oxide or sulfate. But few brands use all-natural.
