Going with the recent thread themes, mom and I have been talking about the possiblity of building a cat perch for one of our windows. We have indoor kitties and lots of birds in the back yard, so we'd like to take advantage of it. Has anyone built one before, or is it better to go and buy one? Also, thinking that a removable one would let us access a spot in the dinningroom that isn't used except for special occasions.
Whaddya think?

I think it would be easier to buy one. They are only $20 or so and it would take a bit more effort to make one. We have one and the kitties love it!

I haven't found them for that cheap here. they're pretty much $40+ with most of them around $60.

I don't know anything about Ontario. Do you have a Petsmart or Petco (I don't even know if Canada has them...). Or any ohter large pet store? They all have them for great prices. Otherwise I see what you mean! Building one would be a whole lot better.

I just got one of those free-standing modular book/storage shelves, put a wider base on it for stability, and a wider top on it for more room, covered the top with carpet, and set it in front of the window.

I've got a 3 shelf open bookshelf (no back or anything) that's sturdy (aka, easily supports a 14 pound cat jumping on it from a running start) and the top shelf is flush with the window sill... when I moved into my apartment, the only place for it was next to the window, so I simply left the top shelf empty, cuz I figured, Oliver would just knock anything off that I put up there anyway.... it's one of his favorite spots and I usually put his kitty grass there too so he can munch and watch

I took a rathar wide shelf that I already had and covered it with a swatch of carpet. Then I attached it securely to the bottom of the window frame with a couple of "L" brackets. It worked like a dream and didn't cost me a dime!

there's some good ideas there!
We do have a Petsmart near us, never been in a PetCo though. Our local Petsmart doesn't carry that particular shelf. I've looked a number of times and their non heated ones run from 40-60 dollars and then their heated ones (not interested) get closer to about $100. It's worth looking around for someone else who carries the one you posted though.

Funny as I begged DBF for a $50 window perch last time we were at Petvalu.
He said if he didn't make me/the boys one within 2 weeks, I could buy it.
He bought the L brackets, some supporting wood and a piece of plywood for $6.00 grand total yesterday...I should start selling them!!
