Has anyone used mice bait in their outbuildings?? Last winter I had alot of mice get into my garden shed and cause some damage to stuff stored inside (no seeds kept in shed. Mice can enter a hole the size of an eraser on the end of a pencil!!! I cannot get the building sealed up to prevent this.
I bought some mouse bait packets at Home Depot and would like to use them however most times now when Bobber is outside she is hunting mice. I can keep her indoors for a while but not for days upon end.
My thoughts: use mousetraps baited with food instead or use the mouse bait when the temps fall below say 12 degrees F and the cats won't go outside anyhow. But what then if the mice aren't moving either???
So any suggestions would be appreaciated.

Can you put the traps in places you know the cat can't get to? You mentioned the mice can get into a pencil hole size place, maybe you can form a trap that takes advantage of this, that way the cats can't get to the poison.

What I'm afraid of is that the mouse will ingest the poison, not die quickly enough and Bobber would just so happen to be outside and catch that mouse. I'll be going to the vet in a couple of weeks-I'll ask that question then.

Do NOT use anything with DCon- extremely dangerous, extremely toxic to cats and not the right way to go.

Believe it or not, one thing that keeps mice far away (besides cats) is Bounce dryer sheets floral scented. Set them on the ground in your garden shed, tie them to implements close to the ground and the mice will beat feet. You can also sprinkle mint powder on the floor and the mice will find other quarters. The best thing about using these means is that if the cat gets into the shed, there are no peanut butter smelling baits for the cat to eat (and then die from eating it) and nothing that will harm the cat

Please try these safer options first. You never know what your cats could get into, and besides that, just because you don't particularly care for the mice doesn't mean you should just up and kill them instead of expelling them. Just my opinion.

I went to the local farm supply store and bought one mouse trap which I'll bait with peanut butter only and a pkg of sticky paper. The back door of the shed has a hinge that is always shut and the front door I block in the winter so nothing except a human could open it. I'll put these out today and next week when I go grocery shopping I will buy some floral bounce sheets and put those down too!!
Thanks for all the advice so far.
DH wanted me to get a live mouse trap but to icky for me right now!!

If you think that is icky the trap you bought will not bode well for you. Often the mice are in such pain they gnaw off their leg or try to to escape. I hate mousetraps, they are cruel and inhumane. Your best bet is to deter the mice, not try and kill them

Cats like to play with their food too and can be very inhumane. At some point you just have to draw the line.

Mouse poison is poison for cats too. Cats can and will die from eating mouse bait or from eating mice who have ingested the bait. Do not use poison, ever. My mom's cat almost died from eating just a bit of D-con, and at the hospital where I work we recently had a large dog die from eating mole poison. The stuff is awful.
