Health is a recent concern with Maine Coons. My coworker breeds Maine Coons so I've heard a bit about it. My coworker has all her cats screened for HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy). This is a disease that has run rampant with Maine Coons and is very important that the parents of the cat you adopt be tested for this. You can also have the test done on your kitten at some point as well. You might want to include a contract point related to this condition. With responsible breeders this should be breeded out of the Maine Coon lines but it is still early.

We also plan on getting a Maine Coon eventually. It is my second favorite breed and my fiance's first favorite. We are interested in showing so it could be fun. It is a great breed of cat and I don't want to sound scary with what I said first but its SO important that Maine Coon breeders are responsible with their studs and queens and get this awful disease eliminated for good!

Maine Coon's live as long as any other cat 16-18 years.

As far as diet goes they can have any premium cat food. The one specifically formuated for Maine Coon's probably targets the fact that these cats woudl be less active (as long haired cats tend to be) mixed with a hairball formula. They don't really need a special diet though but if hairballs become a problem then things like laxatone are easy to use with the cats. My cat loves the flavor of most all hairball medications!

Just curious, are you planning to screen your bengals for HCM as well? It is also a concern for our breed.

I didn't think it was as prevalent in bengals as it is with MC's. Or at least I sure don't see many breeders screening. Its certainly something I need to look into before I breed her though.

Do you screen yours?

I just exchaned e-mails with teh breeder who is mentoring me through this about HCM. Evidently my cats line has tested negative up to this point (she has been involved for several generations back).

This is more on topic regarding HCM for anyone else interested. She said you can test a kitten for HCM but it will only tell at that point and time if they have it which means you would have to test later. She said at 2 years old they can guarantee if a cat has HCM or not. So any test done before 2 years won't guarantee anything genetically.

She ultimately recommended because of the negative testing up till now that I get her tested at a more appropriate age.

You also need to find out if your breeder screens for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). It's also a problem with the MC Breed.

Not sure if its true or not, but I've heard the very large cats are coming up with problems of hip dysplasia - maine coons, ragdolls, and other cats over 15 lbs. Anyone know?
