Today Gizmo, 3 y/o, began not eating or drinking, rapid breathing, crying when back half touched, threw up small amt of foam once. Will walk & jump up when bothered-he wants to be alone. Is not passing any blood or discharge, no visible signs of injury, eyes appear fine, no signs of toxicity-I've seen that before. Thought his breathing may be stress but not sure. Gizmo gained weight in last several mos but my husband says Gizmo hasn't been irritable last couple wks. Gizmo is a Daddy's boy so my husband would know. If no improvement taking to vet tomorrow but any info or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like a number of things could be wrong/ I would NOT wait until tommorow/ Take him to an emergency vet RIGHT NOW!!!! If you give people your zip code someone on the site will be able to look up an emergency hospital in your area and give you contact information. Dont make your cat suffer simple because it is a sunday. This is why 24 hour emergency vet hospitals exist.

If Gizmo is showing signs of pain when you touch him, he is in bad shape - cats usually hide their pain at all costs. Could he have injested something (thread, pins, other bad items)?

I have to agree with others - get Gizmo to a vet today, or at least call one and get some professional advise. They can ask the right questions to determine if this is an emergency.

I hope this cat has been taken to the emergency pet service. It sounds to me like toxic poisoning of some kind. The foam makes me think that because I saw that when Max died of renal failure in July. Please keep us posted how he is doing.

Thanks to all who replied. Coincidentally, we actually took Gizmo to the er vet after only reading the initial reply, but we did call the vet first. Gizmo had surgery early today and thank goodness his kidneys are in good shape so he will be okay. We're relieved that he is going to be okay. Turned out to be crystals in his urinary tract that would not pass and was causing urine to back up. The vet compared them to kidney stones in humans and said like humans, some cats get them and some don't. She was surprised that Gizmo had only began showing discomfort and stopped eating/drinking yesterday. She said he probably stopped urinating a few days ago but would have still went to the litter box and tried, so unless we were actually watching for him to urinate we wouldn't have realized it because he is not an only cat. The vet said Gizmo's bladder was enlarged, which had been difficult for us to determine since he had plumped up over the last 4-5 mos. I am going to find out if the weight gain could have been due to this, even though it was months ago. In the meantime, he will stay in the hospital...will get out Wed or Fri then be on antibiotics for a month. He will be on a special diet the rest of his life...don't know the details yet but it will be a small price to pay for him being healthy. Thanks to all again.

Bless you for taking him in right away. It's so frustrating when people here describe the horrible misery their cats are in, but refuse to get them to a vet! If my kitties were sick and I had no money, I'd go to the vet and sign my SOUL over to them if necessary. ~ sigh ~

So glad your baby is getting better!

I am so, so glad you took him to the vet! If you had waited till the next day it probably would have been too late. But it's amazing how quickly they can recover if they are treated in time.
