Cats >Cars kill about 5.4 million cats per year--more, by a million-plus, than are killed in U.S. animal shelters! Most of them are hit at night. Typically cats know cars are dangerous, but confuse the beams from your headlights with your car itself. When the lights go by them, they think it's safe to dash out. Expect them to make this mistake and you'll be prepared to react if they do.

Thank you for the EXCELLENT tip! I've often wondered why cats, and other animals dash out like that! I've had both a coyote and a deer dash out & hit the rear fender of my car, and die. I couldn't figure out why that was, and now I know. What a sad statistic about cats & cars..
I know that cars in our area are the leading cause of deer loss, too, and in this desert area, deer are becoming scarce, which in turns has a negative impact on the food chain, not just mountain lions, but coyotes, raccoons & ravens, who also enjoy a venison feast.

Thank you for this. I HATE killing things with my car, and seeing roadkill. It makes me angry that all these animals are killed by us. People say it's just "natural" but I don't agree. "Natural would be them getting killed in the wild and eaten or something like that, not being killed by MACHINES that WE built. Cars and stuff aren't NATURAL, it's a man made convenience that kills. Yes, I have a car, but I try my HARDEST not to hit anything, I'm always watching for animals..(Oh, and people too, hehe) I've hit a squirrel and a skunk.
The skunk was at night and I didn't see what it was, I thought it was a cat.
I was crying hysterically when I got home, my mom thought something bad happened to me, and I made her drive me back to the site to see if it was a cat. I'm glad it wasn't a cat, but still sad that I killed something. I'm especially upset that it was while I looked down at my radio to change the station and didn't have enough time to react when I looked back up and there was the skunk running across the road. To this day, I remember the song that was playing on the radio when I went to change it. It made that much impact on me...

I just recently bought them both one of these:

which fit well with these:

I also bought one for my mom's cat but she is a persian mix so the collar is only visible when she is running.
Yes! Those are great, I think I may get a couple of those collars for both my cats.
Thanks.

I wasn't aware of the number of cats killed by cars. That is a scary number.

Katie, thanks for posting that.

It would be great if someone would develop car lights that went around the entire car, to protect animals. Plus it would probably improve safety for car passengers too since it would make the cars more visible overall...
