Welcome to the site Billy. I'm glad you have come to this board and asked questions before moving ahead with breeding your male.

The simple answer to your first question is YES. The reason you need breeding rights is due to the genetics of your cat. If you do not have papers for your cat or if you received papers but not breeding rights..then your cat may have undesirable traits that could be passed along to the kittens. This would mean that your kittens could not be registered by the pedigred cat registries.

As far as what age you can breed male cats...my suggestion is that if your cat doesn't have breeding rights that you should have your male neutered.

If you are truly interested in breeding..then I recommend that you attend some cat shows and speak to the breeders at the show...learn as much about the breed as possible. And if you are still interested in breeding, save up your money so you can buy a male that does have breeding rights.

From the sounds of it you dont have papers. When a breeder sells a Cat of breeding quality with breeding rights. You get the Blue Slip (if they are CFA) paper with a pin code in it. You have to send that to the registry with your money to get your registeration papers.

For a Pet Quality Most breeders hold the paper work til proof of S/N and at that time will give you the blue paper with NO pin code. So you get your pet quality papers.

You should have had to sign a contract reguardless.

My suggestion is go to shows. And get a mentor.

www.cfa.org to find shows in your area.

You need to contact the breeder..he/she should have given you records on your cat that state whether you have rights to breed your male or not. If you don't have this...you need to contact the breeder you acquired him through.

As far as finding shows in your area...looks like there is one coming up in NJ in January:

Hi Billy,

If you had breeding rights for your cats- you would paid double, probably even triple the price that you paid for your cat.

Perhaps you could contact the breeder of your Persian and see if breeding rights could be arranged?

If you did pay pet price, then it's probably best if you desex him.

IMO just because you have a purebred cat (with or without papers) doesn't mean you should or need to breed him/her. Most good breeders have a written contract letting you know if you bought the cat as a pet (to be neutered/spayed) or a show (alter or breeding rights). If its bought as a pet, then you must neuter/spay.

Only top quality cats should be bred and those are few and far between. Breeding is not a matter of putting 2 cats together. You need to be studying pedigrees and asking yourself - WHY should this cat be bred; WHAT will he/she contribute to the breed; and if you have that good of a cat, you will want to prove it by showing. A cat that only makes champion usually is not a top quality cat (there are exceptions) but if he/she is top quality you should be able to get a GRAND CHAMPION out of him/her.

Do you have registration papers? If not, do NOT breed your cat. Do you have a pedigree? If not, do NOT breed your cat. If you have the pedigree, how many champions and more important GRAND champions are there? Those titles will be on the pedigree. If you have no champions or grands in the first 2 generations, you don't have a good enough cat to be breeding.

It would be a lot better (and healthier) to neuter your cat and forget the hassles of breeding unless you are breeding to improve the cat - not breeding to make money or get your investment back or because you have a pretty cat or its purebred.
