chicken necks and feet (as your butcher) or the babyteeth toys dipped in gravy. or a dishcloth smeared with something yummy.

the dishcloth and the baby teethers can be put in the fridge to sooth sore gums.

I am on the Chazhound site for my doggies - it's really good, lots of good advice.

Our pups get chews that are shaped like pigs ears but are made out of dried pork. They love them, takes them forever to eat one (therefore stay occupied for hours...lol) but it doesn't hurt their breath or their tummies. They were a great find...

I've heard that pork is also bad for dogs
I know when we gave our Cocker any pork, he'd throw it up and then get the runs after. There are a few sites for Cocker owners that I was on, and they all say not to feed dogs pork products.Grapes, raisins, mushrooms, pork, raw hides are some of the dangerous things to give to dogs.
I would go by what your Vet suggests and says is safe.

We have rawhides for our dog, but the cats never touch them. Now the kitten "thought" she was gonna try some of our lab's big beef knuckle bone but got stopped by a growl of "its mine"

I would think catnip stuffed toys would be safer and more intersting then rawhide.

Our vet is ok with our giving rawhide. I always supervise. We also give the all natural bones the big mammoth ones. those last longer around here than rawhide. I have seen the kitties go after those too LOL but they all have thier own toys. sometimes they just have to switch i guess..

Giving Rawhide is okay, I give my dogs rawhides all the time, however rawhide is not digestible. Therefore animals usually pass the rawhide. It is much safer and more effective to feed beef-hide chews, as they are digestible.

It's fine for your cat probably to suck on it or what have you, I doubt your kitty could soften it enough to actually chew on it like a dog would.

I just found at my local pet shop a new line of toys (i'll check back with the name) there is a small, tightly stuffed little toy there for teething purposes. You are supposed to chill it in the freezer/fridge and then give it to your kitten to chew on. I wish i had found these things when Rambo was teething. he chewed up the edges of my bed and coffee table. (he's lucky he is so cute!). If your kitten has a favorite smallish, tightly stuffed toy (i.e. sisal mouse), you may be able to make due freezing that and then (after making sure it's not too cold), giving it to your kitten to soothe his gums.

Just my two cents worth!

When Clinton was teething he didn't like the chilly kitty toys, but he did have a small gummy nylabone that he loved to chew on. It was the size made for yorkies and was chicken flavored, but his favorite was still the legs on the coffee table, oh well!

good luck!

We feed our doggy pigs ears all the time.

Hi Zazusmom...i went back into the store i mentionned and found the teething toys. They are made by a company called Petstages. They are called:

-Chilly Kitty Chews
Chilly Kitty Chews help cool and sooth tender gums.
* Can be frozen
* Soothes tender gums as cat chews
* Light weight toys can be batted and carried
* Fun to chew and play

Both PetsMart and Petco in Huntsville, AL carry petstages chews. Guzzler still prefers toes though.

I agree with all who stated that rawhides (even compressed ones) are dangerous.
The dog could be ok for 5 years with them and suddenly have a problem.
Its not worth the risk IMO.
I would give my dogs raw soup beef bones (nothing should be cooked or smoked, etc)
They can occupy a dog for hours and the bones are raw and soft/pliable.

And you can often get them for free or cheap at the butcher.

I came across these n-bone cat chew treats... they look like rawhide treats for cats (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...lance&n=284507)

Has anyone tried these? Do they last a while like dog treats? Shorty loves to gnaw on our fingers and he sometimes goes a little overboard... ouch! I would love to get him a yummy, finger shaped
, chew to exchange for our fingers.
