One of my friends lives in Australia next door to a breeder. This man lets his Persian stud outside (not in a pen) on his own with no supervision and the kitty thus impregnates every stray female in heat. There is a new generation of Persian moggy crossbreeds in her area. This man will not keep his male cat inside as he sprays but will not build a enclosure for him as its "too costly."
My friend was extremely upset when coming upon the stud (in her words) raping her neutered female cat. She understandably got very angry and returned the stud to her neighbor threatening to have him neutered if he did this again. He said if she did this he would "sue her for all she was worth!"
What is your advice on this situation? Can he just let his stud out to impreginate every cat/stray in the neighbourhood? Doesn't he have any responsibility?

The cat is not mine please read the post properly if you want to reply. The cat has access to a garden via a cat flap she has always been an outdoor cat. In fact my friend was only given the cat from the shelter on the condition of access to a garden.

My post was meant to be general advice. Thats my advice keep "your" (IN GENERAL) cat inside. IF your friend kept her cat inside there would be no oppurtunity for her neighbors cat to "rape" her cat.

Ok well thanks my cats are indoor. My friend won't keep her cat indoor because she (the cat! ) cries and scratches at the door. What about the stray cats? Do you have any advice on dealing with the breeder?

This is a tough one. I certainly would not advise your friend to neuter the neighbors cat because he probably would be able to sue her. She can turn the tables and sue him however, I am not familiar with Australian law but in the United states you can sue for nuisance. If she is that concerned then she should consult an attorney. I would advice against it though, it is very dangerous to start feuds with neighbors especially when you have outdoor animals. It would be very easy for him to retalitate by harming her cat. I think the best advice is if she is truly concerned for her animals safety is to not allow her cat out. My cats scratch at the door all the time and I dont let them out. If she stops the practice the cat will eventully get used to an indoor only lifestyle.

Thats good advice. I live in an apartment so even if my cats scratch there is no option! I did try and say that to her but she doesn't believe in keeping indoor cats and bought their house specifically for the cats to have the garden access. She seems to be angry that her cats should be banned from their garden.

Also their area has always had lots of stray cats which she TNRs as much as possible but the neighbour is making the problem a lot worse with his stud cat. BTW she has no problems with the breeding of pedigree cats but these new cats are moggys.

How about contacting the local RSPCA (or similar) snd asking there advice. Also the breeder must be a member of an Association if he breeds contact them also. They will not look kindly on behaviour like this

My first thought was to contact the breed associations. And I don't want to hijack this thread, but it is true that in the UK most shelters/rescue orgs insist on a garden for the cat before they will let you adopt. And many people, myself included, are like your friend in choosing our own living space to accommodate the cats. There is a cultural difference on this between the US and UK.

all the rescues near me refuse to home some cats to indoor only homes too. besides, even if her friend did keep her cat indoors that isnt helping the feral cats and her cat is spayed so it wouldnt prevent any kittens.

all i can say is this breeder is an awful, awful man!

i agree with xdx about contacting the rspca and the breeds association. if nothin else the rspca will keep it on file.

maybe contact some tnr groups in the area and thye can put some pressure on this guy, or failing that sp/n the ferals and rehome the (presumably adorable looking and highly adoptable) kittens?

Thats funny because all the rescue organizations in US for the most part require indoor only before they will adopt out the cat. You could never have an outdoor cat in NYC though. Even if you have a backyard, which the house that my apartment is in does, it is just to close to major roads and the long island expressway, they wouldnt last 10 minutes outside.

i never even heard of indoor cats until my friend got a pair of burmese from a breeder a few years ago.

here and australia too i think, indoor/outdoor cats are the norm.

back to the topic:

your neighbour can at least protect her cats by putting a cat fence around her garden to keep the tom out.

Thanks for that suggestion! That makes a lot of sense. U think she might be scared of complaining to her Association because of retalition.

I think he hates moggies. He does treat his own cats well supposedly, maybe thats why he won't pen his stud. On the other hand if he is so against "keeping him in a cage" then he should keep him inside and deal with the spraying.

Oh I don't know!

he's a fool to himself. an unspayed tom can be tempted to stray to find females so when his expensive stud goes missing or catches fiv through fighting he's omly got himself to blame.

maybe your friend could warn him of the dangers of fiv? very prevailent in un-neutered toms

Great idea! I mean if he cares about abou his tom maybe he would reconsider. You would think as a breeder he would already know about these things, as a cat owner I do.

He doesn't sound like someone I'd want to purchase a cat from. He sounds very mean and irresponsible. There must be something she can do. I think contacting the associations sounds like a good idea. If she's afraid of retaliation, see if it can be done anonymously?

He does sound extremely irresposible. I doubt the fancy he belongs to will do anything about it though.

touro1979, please it may be the norm to keep your cats inside in your country but it's a lot different over here in NZ.
