i dont think Jaded is coming back anymore, lol.? i have my own question..maybe i can look in a cat book, its been a while since i've looked at like a directory of cat breeds..but can there be papers for..lets say..tuxedo cats?? is that the actual breed name for them? and you can have a whole pedigree..?? i dont want to sound naive..but im not as familiar with cat breeds as i am with dogs/horses. i am not that secluded i know breeds..but...i think i might have to go find a cat breed directory site now..i just wondered if there are certain cats..like..i had an orange..tabby i guess you'd say....obviously he came from a random litter at my cousins place over 10 years ago (they lived near an orchard and had many cats but strays that came around) if my question makes sense..good, lol. i mean is tabby just a mix breed? CAN it be a purebred? i want to learn/understand more about the breeding ways of cats..so i thought i'd just add this question on here! thanks!

the only reason i use tuxedo cat/tabby cat is just because those are the two that just came to my mind! not attacking them in any way!

Sharkey's right-your talking about colors and patterns rather then breeds. Bengals are considered tabbys (marble tabby and spotted tabby) and you can have orange colors in lots of breeds. It's like saying your horse is a bay or a chestnut-that's not a breed it's a color. If you say your horse is dapple grey that means it is grey (or white w/ black skin) with dapple spots but that dosen't tell what breed he is.

There are only a few cases where "color" is part of a breed/name. Russian Blue and Havana Brown are 2 examples. Otherwise color is just the color of the cat - its NOT a breed.

Black/white cats where the white is on the face, chest, paws are called "tuxedo" only cause that is what the pattern of the color looks like - the cat is wearing a tuxedo. But they are not breeds - its still a black/white bicolor cat.

Most of teh time cats don't exist in breeds either. Its easy to see a dog is part this and part that. Cats just don't work that way. This would have to imply a purebred male escaped a breeder and then litters resulted. The chances are really low. They are just termed domestic shorthair, and that is the natural state of the cat. The most likely way mixes occur is when a purebred female escapes during heat and comes back pregnant. These sorts of things happen a lot and so unless you know the mom is purebred its probably not related to one.

The colors and patters you mentioned exist in many breeds. Maine Coon's can express tuxedo, orange, tortie, tabby, just about anything. Some breeds don't require the cat to be a certain color or pattern but others do. Siamese must be pointed, bengals are tabbies, havana brown's are solid, etc.

Here in NZ we actually do have a breed called the "Russian" because it comes in Blue, Black and White!
