Am I wise or paranoid?

Do you answer the door when you are home alone and not expecting anyone?

Sometimes I feel so foolish for not answering. Today, for example, an unmarked white van pulled up in the drive. They knocked on the door, sat in the drive for awhile then finally left. I was not expecting anyone so I didn't answer. They did not leave a card or note. Maybe I have watched too much TV.

I usually don't answer! I run to the door and look thru the peephole in our door and if I dont know who it is, then I don't answer. I'm with you on this one!!

I have a gun (in a safe) and a baseball bat by the door. If someone in an unmarked van that I didn't know came by and rang my bell, I'd answer, but that's because I'm pretty secure in my ability to defend myself.

Same here. Luckily for us, we have a gate with a buzzer, so they can't even get as far as the front door without us buzzing them in. If I'm not expecting anyone and don't recognize them, they don't get in the gate.

Better to be safe, I think.

Now that we have dogs, I'll answer the door & stand inside the screen door with the dogs next to me. But when I lived in an apartment without dogs, I'd never answer the door to a stranger. There are stories of home invasions on the local news pretty frequently

Anyway, most of the times I've answered the door with the dogs, the stranger knocking turns out to be selling something, anyway. So don't feel bad - you're probably just missing out on sales pitches.

I always answer the door. If they try anything..either I die and go to heaven..or I win and kick their bum!!

But usually if they're using the door I know it's not my friend Bobby cuz for some odd reason..he has this strange obsession for my window.

I am like you and usually don't answer the door. Good manners suggests that one should call first! And if they don't want to have common courtesy, they don't deserve my attention!

BTW, you might mention what happened to law enforcement. Once my sis was observing a van in her condo complex parking lot and felt "funny" about it. (it was daytime & most of the residents were at work). I told her to call her neighbor who did daycare, who brought the kids in from her backyard. Anyway, the cops were able to send an officer who apparently found enough of a cause to stop & question the guys, and the guys all had warrants out for them; one was in violation of parole for a previous crime where he assaulted an homeowner during a botched burglary! So, ya never know.....

I don't answer either. If it is a friend they are pretty good about calling me from the front porch if I don't answer the door. If it is not one of them then it must be a burgler, soliciter, someone convincing me that I am a sinner and need to go to THEIR church, or the next door neighbor to chat. None of which I really need to speak to!

If i don`t see the person driving in and recognise them ...and they don`t holler at the door(my friends know to do this) then I won`t answer either.
Sometimes I don`t know anyone is at the door til I hear them knock....so I will watch out the kitchen window (where they can`t see me) and if i recognise them as they are going back to their vehicle, then I`ll holler out to them if I know them.
I don`t open the door to strangers. I live in the country, and although I have neighbors i`m not sure they are close enough to hear me scream.
I think you are being wise!!!

I don't because I live in a 3 story walk up with no peephole.
I usually call out to see who it is..If its a stranger, delivery man, whatever, I tell them to come back when BF will be home.
(silly and more girly than I usually am but I live in a crack infested neighbourhood).
And I am not paranoid whatsoever in this regard.
