Our TNR coordinator is responding to Alley Cat Allies call for help in Louisiana and is making preparations to travel to New Orleans next week. I'm trying to help her get ready and she asked me to try to find a small canister of pepper spray, preferably one that can be attached to a belt.
Any suggestions on where I can buy one? I've never bought anything like this for myself. Thanks!

If you have a Spy Store in your area...it can be purchased there.

Just make sure she knows how to use it & it is legal where she is going.

I've found it at auto parts stores and some hardware stores, too. Make sure she tests the cannister (outdoors, with the wind blowing away from her) to make sure it works, too.

If she's flying, she'll need to find out if it can be safely carried in checked luggage - if she tries to carry it on the plane with her, it'll be confiscated.

I agree with Tuxedokitties-check hardware stores, they would surely have something you would think?

What about WalMart or Target type stores? I would think they might have something too?

Good luck finding something, let us know where you end up getting some at!

Better still, why doesn't she pick up a rape-alarm as well? They're legal all over the place, and they act as a very effective means of defence, without hurting anyone. Well, maybe a couple of ears here and there, but it does work and send potential threats running. I woudln't know where you could pick up a pepper spray from, having never been in an area that needs something like that, but I was just adding a little extra suggestion. Stay safe!

Seriously
a rape alarm is a little device - sometimes on a wrist strap, and if you're in danger, you can either push a botton on it, or pull a string out (there's usually a very quick start mechanism on it) to start an incredibly loud and high pitched constant tone. That sound is high enough and loud enough to really frighten an attacker, sometimes hurting their ears too so a getaway is made possible, and it also lets people around you know that you're in trouble. It's a system designed to draw attention to you and your assailant. Most assailants will run at the first sign that there could be a chance of getting busted.

this link is jsut a random one I pulled up off google, but it explains a bit about them, give you the pictures and how effective they are.

I buy mine, at a gun shop. As for the rape alarm, that's well and good, if there are other people within hearing but, you want to be able to STOP the attacker and incapacitate him. Get the pepper spray.
