Seriously, when Mark was in fourth grade, HE had a problem, coming straight home from school. I allowed the boys 15 minutes, to walk that four blocks. If they weren't home, within 1/2 hour, I went looking for them. Always, I found Mark wandering the neighborhood and goofing off.
Finally, I solved the problem: every day, for a full week, I met Mark at his classroom door, took him by the hand (in front of his classmates), walked him to my car, buckled his seat belt and drove him home.
Was he embarrassed? Darn right, he was. Did he start coming straight home from school? Darn right, he did.
