I know this is a cat site, but Shelby was my "fur-family" also..so here goes:
In 1992, my ex-husband and I decided to get a dog to add to our family of 3 cats and 2 kids (ages 1-3)..He knew that I had always wanted a cocker spaniel dog, so he found us a buff colored puppy and the kids named her Shelby....let me tell you how absolutely wonderful this dog was..she watched over the kids from the get-go..if ever the kids were outside in the yard, there she was watching and playing with us, and we never had to be afraid of anyone coming near the yard because she would just go wild to alert...She had all of the usual "cocker" problems from ear infections, to skin allergies, and piddled when excited, and she had hip dysplasia, which after only 5 years of having her, this prevented us from getting to walk her for any lenghth of time, arthritis had set in...she slept with us, waited for us to come home, was never was destructive of anything, and she also loved our cats.
Last year around this time, we had to let Shelby go. She had gone deaf from all of the ear infections all of her life, she had cataracts so bad she was mostly blind, and her arthritis was no longer treatable with meds...
It was so incredibly hard to say goodbye, but I knew it was best for her...she wagged her tail and kissed me goodbye for the last time, and she didn't even wimper when they gave her the shot....
I have been missing her so much all of this year, but I can't stop
right now over the grief I am feeling today...I know she is watching down on me, and I know she will be waiting for me at the RB..
Sorry for rambling on so long.
To Shelby, My Darling Sweet RB Angel
May your eyes now allow you to see the Sun,
May your ears now be able to hear my whispers,
May your legs allow you to run free,
And may your heart always know the I
you, now and for always.
