My Dad is 88 years old. He has macular degeration in his eyes. He had a stroke last year. Because of the stroke effect, he can no longer drive, although he has no paralysis. The drs diagnosed him with cataracts in his eyes and now they want to do surgery. I wonder if anyone has had any experience with this surgery in a person as old as my dad. He still lives alone and can see well enough to dress, prepare himself some food and handle his personal needs. He can't see to read anymore. I am open to advice, opinions etc.

Is it the laser surgery?

My father is a frail 75. He had a stroke 5 years ago. He had cataract surgery last year with NO problems. I was a basketcase, but he was fine. He didn't even need teh mild sedative taht they sometimes give.

My mom also had cataract surgery late in her 70's. She needed a little help doing things for a few days after the surgery since she couldn't wear her glasses. The doctor recommended taking the lens out on the side of the surgery, but she has problems with her balance. But thats my mom. Once she had both eyes done, she was back to doing her own housework with no problems.

I'm sorry about your father's health issues.
My grandmother is also 88. She has had several cataract surgeries later in her life. Would it help you feel better if you spoke to the eye surgeon about your concerns? I know that my grandmother is always happy when she gets procedures like this done. She phones me and tells me about how bright and beautiful all the colors are.

My Dad had cataract surgery twice in his 80s. When asked about it, his response was "a piece of cake". My mother-in-law also had cataract surgery in her 80s. She wasn't quite as blithe about it, but didn't have any difficulty, and I'm sure won't protest if she needs to have the other one done.

My grandpa is 79 and had cataract surgery. He had complications from one eye and got some kind of infection, but it was cleared up quickly and he's doing quite well.
