I feed my cats raw but do not mix my own batches. Because of this I'm starting to supplement my own taurine since they are not getting any hearts. The amount of taurine a cat needs is very small compared to 1000mg capsules that I have. I'm concerned I might give to much since I would mix it into a pound of meat at a time. Is it something that can be overdosed or does it pass through the system safely?

Does anyone know how many mg I should put into a pound at a time?

I have been told it will be broke down and pass which makes sence since it is an amino acid

Hmmm. I just found a recipe that uses 2000mg for 2.5lb of meat. I guess I could use a whole capsule for 1lb and not have to worry.

Thanks sharky. That does make sense. I'd rather them get a little more than they need than to little.

I red once that excess taurine is better than taurine deficiency, some vitamins and nutrients depletes in the freezer,

According to Dr Pitcairn DVM, PhD :

60 to 80 mg per day for a ten pound cat.

Raw diet prepared as recommended already contains 30 to 50 mg of Taurine per serving.
