Hi,

Just did a google search and found this site, thought maybe I'll post my problem and get some advice.

My exGF lived in my apartment, and we got a kitten, it's about 7 months now. However, we broke up and she doesn't want the cat, and I'm stuck with it. I'd love to keep it, but I recently got a letter from the landlord saying no pets or I'd possibly get evicted.

I don't want to give her to a shelter, I want her to have a good home. Unfortunatly, I don't know many ppl who want a kitten. I'll ask around at work and friends, anything else I can do? Is there any place where I can post my cat online for ppl to look at??

Here's a pic of her, her name is Naula.

What a beautiful cat. I can't understand why your ex would not want her. I have no help for you way up here in Canada, but hopefully you will be able to find her a good, loving home.

Brian:

It's unfortunate that this happened. Ask your landlord to give you time to find a suitable home for your kitty. Please, please don't take the kitty to the shelter !!

I'll give you a couple of forums you can go to and try to post there and see if anyone can adopt her. You can go to the Best Friends website at www.bestfriends.com and click where is says hurricane relief. You will see "News Reports" and "Post Your Stories". You can post there but you'll have to register first in order to post. Best Friends also has a forum; the link is provided on the right side of the page; just scroll down and you will see "No More Homeless Pets Forum". Post in the "Rescue" section of the forum. Another place to post is Snowballschance.org at www.snowballschance.org. You'll have to register; go to "Main Forum", click "Urgent: Animals Needing Adopting" and make a post there. Additional forums are "Animal Club" at www.animal-club.com and "Paw Talk" at http://www.paw-talk.net/forums/index.php. When you make your post please state what town, state you are in...it's a big help to let people know where you're from !!

Good luck !!

If you signed a lease that did not prohibit pets, I don't think your landlord can legally change that contract until your lease is up. Also, it may be that he's making this new rule because of someone else -- a big, rowdy dog in some other apartment, maybe. Perhaps if you invited him in to see your kitten, he'd realize she's not a problem and make an exception...

Petunia has a good idea. My landlady had a fit when I first had a cat....but; after meeting my "tribe" she doesn't mind at all. I have 5 (yes; 5) cats; all rescues. I keep my apartment very clean and she's happy. She often says that I keep my apartment cleaner than anyone else's who has kids!!! Try and negotiate with the landlord. If you really love the kitty; try and negotiate. My cats make no noise and they haven't harmed anything. Sometimes landlords are under the misconception that a cat would tear apart the place and damage things. Be reassured; they don't. People damage apartments. Talk to your landlord agan. Keep us posted. Please, please don't take the kitty to a shelter.

i agree.

the question is, do you want to try to keep this cat?

if so, have a word with your landlord. you can get a letter from your vet stating that the cat is well cared for and spayed/neutered which might also put their fears at rest.

if your landlord is worried about the apartment being damaged by the cat make sure you have lots of scratching posts and/or use softclaws (please do not even consider de-clawing!) which are like glue on nail caps for cats. lots of people here also clip their cats claws.

cats make wonderfull compainions, i really wouldnt be with out mine, and i dont think you would regret it if you put in the time and effort to keep this one.

Welcome to TCS, Brian & Naula!! Condolences on the breakup of your relationship. How, How, could your ex just abandon Naula like that!!
I hope that your landlord would be open to negotiating a pet. Is a "pet deposit" totally impossible for you? I've had to offer to pay a pet deposit when the building ownership changed hands, and although the answer was "yes", I was allowed to make $10 payments for 10 months. Best of luck to Naula & you! And who knows, maybe your search will be more successful than you can imagine - you might make some wonderful acquaintances...

Those who mentioned the lease issue make a good point. I would recommend reviewing your lease to see if it has a "no pets" clause. If it does not, then your landlord can't suddenly change the rules.

In addition to the advertisements, I would recommend networking with any groups you are affiliated with, for example your co-workers, fellow members of your church/synagogue/other religious community, members of any clubs or social groups you belong to, etc. Also, stop by local vets' offices with an advertisement poster. Vet's offices are a great place to try to find homes for cats because the staff will be able to tell you if the client is a good cat guardian. And often they have longtime clients whose elderly pets die and who are looking for a new kitty for their family.
