But then they started ISSP, I spent one day in there and followed the dress code for the rest of the year!
I got ISSP in a room that had no windows and *Gasp* the power went out and *Double gasp* They forgot about me!!..Now you know why I'm scared of the dark cuz this was in elementary school

A woman after my own heart!! I am exactly the same, except I do have a computer at home so TCS is taking over my life aaaaarrrggghhhhhh.
I just hope the amount of time I spend on the net doesnt flag something up with the IT department and I get found out!!
We didnt have access to the internet when I was at school but we used to play Solitaire in the library but the teacher had this access to all the computers where he could just see what you were doing and close it down. The curser just moved across the screen to the X to shut it down, without you even moving the mouse! VVV annoying - spoil sport

Ooooooooh if he did that to me all heck would break loose!!!!!!

Then again I'm used to everything just shutting down since my dad has access to the modem outside of my room..so he just pushes the button and everything goes bye bye..

I'm with Lille Kat. No offense, but you don't belong surfing the net and hanging out on TCS while you are at school. If you are out of work to do, then perhaps you need some more challenging coursework. Sorry, but as an educator, I will never condone goofing off here over doing something productive in school.

I was waiting for you to see this Deb. I knew as soon as I saw you had responded there would be trouble!

You know me too well. If there is one thing I am passionate about it's education and taking good advantage of the best 13-yr. free gift you are given in the US. You only get one trip through. Make the most of it before you're spending your life asking people if they want fries with that.

And you are absolutely 100% right. For the record, in case you saw my post about getting into trouble, it was only the dress code. Aside from that I was a perfect angel in high school
! Now if I could just get through college

What does the teacher expect you to do when your work is done? I would have a talk with him about that. You can't just give a kid a computer w/internet and nothing to do. It seems to me that your school gives you an awful lot of down time! Shouldn't he be teaching you guys instead of babysitting a computer lab? It seems that there is other stuff you could learn, like different computer programs and stuff. I used to read books in study hall or read magazines in the library. We didn't have internet in school back then... What a difference 10 years makes!

Reminds me of my days of ISS in high school. At first, it was held in classrooms. But once it moved to the auditorium with very uncomfortable wooden chairs (that I couldn't fall asleep in) I started to try to behave better.

I don't know what they do for homework now, but when I was in school, I was always swamped. And if I ran out of things to do in the classroom, I would ask to help out the teacher. They called it Teacher's Aide way back when. There is no way I would want my kids goofing off on the Internet when they are supposed to be learning.

The internet can be a really great learning tool. Think of how much research any one of us has done online, and I don't just mean shopping.
There are plenty of educational and enriching things a student can do on a computer, and honestly from a former teacher's perspective - any forum isn't going to be it. While there is a wealth of information and education on this site, let's be honest - it isn't in The Lounge or Fur Pictures. The best educational tools on this site are the articles.

There is always going to be down time in classrooms as some kids will always be faster than others.

When I did computer studies, as I used to finish up pretty quickly, if there was no other work to do then the teachers would let us play around on the net.

There has to be some fun in the learning system otherwise kids don't want to be there.

I think that pretty much says it all - KIDS don't want to be there if it isn't fun. Unfortunately kids often don't know what is best for them and need someone to tell them (even if they don't want to listen). Well, you know what, life isn't always fun either and for those who have ambition and motivation they will always find something else to do and/or learn even if they have finished one assignment when in the classroom, and still find time to "play" and "have fun" after class.

If I were a teacher I would definitely not allow my students to waste valuable time and I would make sure that those students that finished their assignments quickly were actually getting most of the assignment correct and not just hurrying it up so they could "play".

altho i'm not worried about getting caught - i'll have loads of downtime, then i'll get really busy, so i have to have something to do in the downtime. for example, today, i was extremely busy from 8am-12n, then nothing the rest of the day. i got on first thing to post Pixel's update, but then couldn't post anything until after lunch. i also have the taskbar on autohide, but that wouldn't help if you're in a computer class - i would hope the teacher knew enough to find it!
