Tuffy had me freaked out a little while ago, He was sleeping next to me then I heard him make a funny noise so I turn around and he is bleeding like mad out of his nose.

I was getting real worried but then the blood stopped as quick as it started. He cleaned the blood off his face and his leg and went back to sleep.

Why does this stuff always come up at nite. We lost those 2 little kittens in the middle of the nite last winter and almost lost Rusty in the middle of the nite. I know this is a dumb question.

I wonder if this has been happening enough that it might account for the anemia? Best to update your vet in the am, hopefully, he sleeps the rest of tonight and no further such incidents. Hang in there Tuffy, your dad is trying to figure out what is going on so you can be healed.

I also hope he is ok till morning.

The new antibiotic is something they don't use very much eccept for real tough cases. I have to get a prescription for the stuff and get it from a pharmacy. She said I need to give it one time a day for a week then every other day for I think 4 weeks.

The other stuff is some liquid that is supost to help him make new blood and have alot of different vitamins in it.

I have to stop to the vet and she is going to show me how to use one of those pill gun things. I hope these meds will at last do the trick.

I am a little upset that I had to ask the vet for the bloodwork, but maybe she held back because the first time I had him there I said I didn't want to spend tons of money on him if he was to far gone to make it. But now I have alot of money in him for all the vet visits anyway and now I just want him better. Tuffy sure is the right name for him I guess, being so sick he still runs around and fights with the other cats and plays with his toys and has a good time. I bet he is going to be a nut when he is all better!!

Sounds like the antibiotic is Zithromax...it is a big gun
We like big guns when we want our kitties to hurry up and get well.

Get some sleep!

Check with the pharmacist to see if the antibiotic comes in liquid. If it does, they may be able to flavor it. Our pharmacy flavors liquid meds for a $3 charge, and they have flavors like tuna and chicken pot pie for the pets.

Whoa, like the Z-pack the give people? Isn't that a bit.... uh..... hefty to use? I'm sure the dose on a 10lb cat is much less than whatever they give people, but I had an experience with it (if it's the same thing, that is).

If it is the same thing, um, you might want to give Tuffy something the help keep the good bacteria in his tummy. The doctor suggested that, while taking the Z-pack, I eat a container of yogurt or two a day.

Anyone have any input?

Just a thought here.....
do you use a fireplace for heat? That can cause sneezing and if the sneezing is bad enough, can cause the nose to bled.Your nose gets so dry from wood heat and it causes it to bled when you sneeze, or bump it.
Have they looked up his nose to see if there is a foreign body up there.Maybe a piece of blanket, a small tumor or something

Good luck and LOTS of prayers coming your way

No fireplace, just forced hot air that really makes it dry in the house.

I forget the name of the stuff, I am going to stop in the morning and get the vitamin stuff and the prescription and the pill gun thing from the vet. As far as the vet knew it is only in pill form, but she said it would be ok to mash it into powder and try it in a little tuna or something he really likes.

Yes she said it was a heavy duty med, they only use it when all else fails.

Tuffy has to get well, I added up the money I have in him now, including the new meds I have about $375 into him now so if he knows whats good for him he better not die on me anytime soon

With all the animals we have now I am thinking of looking into some kind of insurance for them, just in case we would ever have to do anything that is really expensive for any of them. I have recently heard something about it someplace or maybe I saw something at the vets about it. I laughed it off at the time but it is starting to make sence now.

EDIT, I don't know if I said, but Tuffy has doubled his weight since I first brought him home. His first vet visit he was only 5.4 lbs, yesturday on the same scale he was 10.5 lbs. He is still tiny compaired to our Panther, he is 18 lbs now.

I am not familiar with "z-Pack" but zithromax is a for humans antibiotic now a drug of choice when a big gun is needed by your vet. We've used it, cough cough, at over $50 a prescription, on two of my cats. So...yes, I am sure that zithroxmax is used with cats.

Good news, The vet told me that the Zithromax was only in pill form but when I took the prescription to wal-mart pharmacy they asked if liquid would be Ok because they didn't have pills that small, I told them liquid would be great because Tuffy and pills don't get along.

So today I picked up the stuff and its even cherry flavored and gave Tuffy his first dose and he didn't even make a funny face or fight or anything.

It is going to be kinda expensive though for the 6 weeks, It was $37 for 10 days worth but after the first 7 days it drops off to one dose every other day so that will help some. I am so happy that I can give him his meds and not have to fight with him and be the bad guy to him.
I hope this stuff finally kills the infection for good, he has suffered long enough.

That's good news, Tom. I'm a bit surprised that he doesn't object to the cherry flavor, but you never know about cats' tastes. I hope this stuff does the trick, and that he makes a full recovery.

Never seen one...we always get ours as pills for the kitty <g>. My pharmacy still finds it funny that I get meds via them for the kitties (i.e. the brethine that Ophelia used to take, the zithromax, the novasc that Tyler is on).

Thanks for all the support. I also have my fingers crossed that this will be the end of his problems when this med is done.

I told Tuffy that with all the money and time and worry I have invested in him he better not up and die on me anytime soon
or I will be very upset with him.
Bad joke I know but sometimes a sense of humor helps to deal with things.

Maybe its wishfull thinking but I think I see improvment in him already after only a couple days on the med. He was tearing around the house last night like a mad kitty and chasing Missy all over, then Missy would chase him all over.

I have never said much about Missy but she is almost 18 years old and a siamieze [sp?] with the funny loooking eyes and she will still tear around with the young cats like she was 2 years old. Kinda funny how I take the other cats for granted unless they get hurt or sick. Sometimes I don't think it has really set in that we have 5 cats in the house now, they all do there own thing and have there favorite spots to sleep so I hardly ever see them all together in one room.

Thanks for the support, I worry sometimes that people are sick of hearing about Tuffy's problems.

Tuffy has been on his meds 4 days now and so far I don't see any problems because of them. He sleeps alot more than our other cats, I guess because he is still sick. He is more playfull and seems better when he is awake though.
