this morning when i took the kids to school i thought i heard a single meow-- it wasnt loud and i thought it was our neigbors adult tortie who does her business in our yard. looked but didnt see the cat. Brushed it off as wind noise and didnt think much about it. I just went outside to go to town and heard the meow again-- i asked my neighbor where her cat was and she said inside-- never heard another meow so i started looking and lo and behold there is a 6 mo old approx kitten in one of the trees next door. It has to be about 50 or more feet up off the ground-- i dont know how it managed to get up there-- ive never seen the cat before and hes licking his lips and wanting down soooooo bad-- here are some pics i just took-- i left him a plate of food to maybe entice him down he just keeps getting higher and higer in the tree-- he seems friendly-- like he wants down soo bad-- the only ladder i or my neighbors have is a 5 ft ladder.-- how can i get him down? i dont know who he belongs to- ( id love to keep him) hes a gorgeous marbled looking tabby-- here are some pictures i just took-- Im leaving at 5 in the morning to go to gatlinburg TN for the weekend so no one will be home ( my nephew is coming to take care of the animals the two days we are gone---) please help me get this kitty down. What can i do? The fire departmet says they cant waste resources on that since we are under a drought and they are out patrolling for brush fires and illegal leaf fires. help me help this kitty please

Cat in tree
Cat from the cat in tree

edited to say: i will not call animal control as they will more than likely shoot it ( they dont have the resources to get this cat down either they have ONE catch pole and one makeshift kennel that they keep in the bed of their ford ranger)-- if you want to know the full story with our one woman animal control then read my post about the feral i was trying to help and how it was tortured and killed and animal control said it was one less for her to worry about

This might be a long shot, but you could try calling around to any companies that would have the trucks with the long arm and bucket on the end. Such as the electric company, tree trimmers, cable company, etc. At some point you would have to get an animal lover on the phone. They might not be able to do it during business hours but I am sure someone would be willing to help in the evening......

Poor baby! Please keep us updated.

He can't be
Poor little guy! I hope you are able to get him down safely. It's so wonderful for you to be doing so much to help him out.

There are several you can do- find someone with a very tall ladder a pickup truck and a passion for climbing trees. Park the truck under the tree, bumper to the trunk. Set the ladder in the bed of the truck and have the person climb the tree to get to the kitten.Instruct them to scruff this kitten tightly about the neck and not bring it anywhere near the body on the climb down, as the kitten is going to freak and lash out.

Call a tree trimming company or a logging company and see if someone is sympathethic to the cause

Call the local television station and ask if they want the story about the kitten in the tree

This one is tricky and you need someone skilled with rope, but take a long rope and put a fishing weight on one end. Swing the rope up over the limb WAY FAR AWAY FROM WHERE THE KITTEN IS PERCHED then bend the branch down slowly towards someone waiting below.

Bring a bag of dry dog food and sprinkle it all the way around the tree- add some organic catnip as well the scent of the two might bring the kitten down.

Good luck-

Call your local fire station (on their direct line, not 911!) and explain the situation. Hopefully they will come and help this poor kitty out (I've seen the fire service do this before for other kitties....)

I know it is a worrisome thing to have this little guy up so far in a tree, especially with you leaving to go away for a few days. A very old and wise vet once told me what he thought about that. "Have you ever seen cat bones in a tree?" I really hope you can get some help for this little cutie, but they find a way to get down eventually. I had a kitty much smaller that that one go up about the same distance, and when it got dark, and he got cold, he shinnined right on down.

Her name is Marbles-- she is an indoor cat (spayed) who has 4 other kitty housemates two doors down-- She didnt even try to scratch the firemen who came-- They said she was the best cat they have ever rescued. OMG im sooooo glad thats over! Her owner's brother heard the commotion and came outside and saw them carrying her down the ladder in my carrier. Her owner is a 8 yr old girl who has been in tears for the last 2 days over her cat missing. WHEW! sooo glad thats over!

That is great - so glad it ended well. And yes, although most cats can get down eventually, there are always a few who fall doing it and injure or kill themselves.

this is the second time this kitty has jetted out the door the brother says-- the first time she didnt go far but she didnt come down for almost 6 days he says-- just a tree in their front yard-- this time though she went two houses down and much much higher. Our neighbor between us had just had all his trees trimmed a month or so ago- had all the branches anywhere near the roof cut off so the branches that are left are really high up-- If it makes any fdifference, the firemen had to extend their ladder attached to the top of their truck almost 3/4 of the way out. its a tall tree! lol

Marbles was rubbing up against the fireman and purring he said she is a lovebug.

Amitya, you're a heroine!

"Common knowledge" about cats is so often wrong... and vets are often guilty of perpetuating the myths. Since I've been working with a shelter, I've learned that cats CAN'T always get down from trees when they're ready, they DON'T always land on their feet, and they WILL eat things that are poisonous to them.

You've got your gold star for the week! :-)

Thank Heavens and YOU that this kitty is safe and sound. I hope she was scared enough that she does`nt try to sneak outside ever again!
