he wants me to hold him all the time!! he is clinging to my chest right now!!!

this is my grandkitty but he has been with me a long time. he gets all lovey dovey with any one who will hold him, so its not any thing to do with me personally

while i love holding him, i just don't have the time to do it as much as he wants

any suggestions for ways to "put him down" tactfully , and/or diversions for him?

any idea why he is so clingy? he was like this with my daughter before he came here, but i figured it was because she is not home much

i, on the other hand, am home ALL the time, so that can't be the reason
thanks in advance

Kittens that have been weaned too early or who have been removed from their mother too soon develop behavior as you have described and you need to encourage them, through toys, to rely less on you. Basically to encourage him to 'get a life' that does not revolve around you. Numerous interactive toys are available from pet stores and veterinary clinics. The addition of climbing structures would enhance his environment. One other consideration would be to get another cat.

You may also consider trying two Bach Flower Essence - Water Violet and Chicory. 5-7 drops per day in a small water bowl along with water.

Hope this helps

Oh, he should be a therapy kitty! Hopefully the interventions mentioned above will help. I have no advice, just a little jealous feeling, way down deep!

Ditto. My Cupid is the same way, and I'm guilt-ridden when I HAVE to eventually put him down, or I just can't hold him at that moment, so I decided to get him a friend. You said it yourself: he'll do it to anyone. So it doesn't matter who meets his needs, as long as they are met.

My only advice if you can't get another cat, is to make time JUST for him. If he's stimulated enough, his desire won't be as immediate.

maybe you can get one of those baby "papoose" things, strap it to your chest, and carry him around. That way he'll be happy and you'll have your hands free. This is a suggestion from someone who modifies their behavior to better accomodate their cats so it might not work out for everyone.

You just described my day with three cats. I worked from home and first Lucy wanted to be held, then after I got her to sleep somewhere else, Much decided it was lap time (at least I get some work done that way). She went off to eat and then it was Carly's turn to be held. I'm finally cat free because hubby is in the kitchen.

Sounds like my Lola! Lola was abandoned by her mother and any/all littermates she may have had and has always seen people as her mommies. Leo helps me out since he cuddles and grooms her and I think she feels very safe with him, but I can, of course, count on having a Lola-pola on my lap or shoulder whenever I sit down.

Both of my babies are therapy cats and they LOVE the attention. Leo, who normally hates new people coming on his territory, loves them as soon as we leave the house. It's a very, very good thing to do.
