Can someone please give me advice? I'm at my wits end...
I have an 8-yr old male cat; he's been an "only cat" for 8 years. I adopted a rescued mama cat (2 hrs) and her female kitten (12 wks) about 6 weeks ago. All are neutered/spayed. Male cat was just curious at first; he's never been around other cats... he and kitten now get along great. However, the mama cat's protective instinct is in full swing. Mama hisses, growls and attacks male cat if he comes near her. If the male and kitten play (wrestle) she makes mewling noises (which can sound like she's in pain), mama cat comes flying to the rescue and attacks the male cat. Male cat "parks" himself at room entrances, top of stairs, follows mama from a distance, etc., essentially keeping mama cat restricted in rooms and stressed out. I always put the male cat in the basement for a couple hours a day, to allow the mama cat to roam around without "fear" the male cat is around. I feel so guilty, especially for the mama cat; when the male isn't around, she's fun, sweet and playful; mostly she's stressed out, always watching for him to come around.
This has been going on for about 6 weeks, and seems to be getting worse. I would greatly appreciate ideas to help me get the male and mam cat to be friends. THANK YOU.
