Hi

I am about to move home and wondered what I should do with my cat.

I think I remember reading somewhere that you need to keep them indoors for something like three months so that they will associate the house as their home.

Is this right? My cat loves being outdoors and if we did not let him out he would find a way of sneaking out on his own.

First of all, is he neutered? If not, having it done, besides being the responsible thing to do, may cut back on his desire to go outside.

Other then that, you might have to wait a few months so he learns that is his new home. You could try taking him out on a harness.

I think taking him out on a harness & leash is a good idea too.

Our neighbor down the street did that when he moved in with his 3 cats - I'd see him out every day with a cat on a leash, one at a time, walking all around the house and yard for a few weeks until they became familiar with their new surroundings.

It's probably best to wait at least a few days after the move to do that, though, to give him a chance to calm down after the stress of the move.
