Nico is not liking his wet food

Gradually for a while now, Nico has seemed more and more indifferent to his wet cat food, of which he gets a 1/4 can a day. He also gets half a cup or so of dry food (this is all Nutro products, so this doesn't sound like much but it is what is recommended).

I want him eating wet food for the moisture. I've tried different flavors, bringing up the temp so its not fridge-cold, etc.

I guess I am ready to attempt another wet food- any suggestions on foods or advice on getting Nico interested in his current food again?

Thanks all!

Maybe you give him the wet food with the same taste all the time? My Murelino doesn't even eat the wet food if I give him the same kind of taste (like fish, chicken, liver) for more than 4 times. So I better give him every time something different, so he doesn't get bored. We (I mean people) also don't like the same things to eat every day. I have no other advice, sorry

I've recently been getting different brands with no by-products and our kits really like the Merrick's.

I'm having the same problem with my kitten. He will "cover up" his food and run to my older cat's dish to eat hers. It's probably because I am feeding him the same flavor - Science Diet only makes one kitten flavor! I have placed an order to switch them to Felidae wet and dry so they can eat the same food and still get their nutrition. In your case, I would try to vary the flavors. Most of his diet is dry food, so variation in the wet food is good.

Instead of giving him a 1/4 can a day, perhaps you could buy small cans or pouches, and thus vary the flavor/food more often. My cat wouldn't dream of eating the same food two days in a row, let alone four.
He'll only eat wet food that comes in small cans, too. I was told by somebody in the business that that's not as crazy as it sounds, because the small cans aren't heated as long as the large cans are, and the food is therefore tastier.

I have a cat that is picky about wet food as well...her favorite brands are Eagle Pack & Wellness...if I try to give her anything else she drags a piece of my clothing into it in disdain

Some cats (:ahem: OLIVER :ahem: ) simply don't like, or come to not like, wet food.... Oliver WILL NOT touch any type/flavor of wet food (although he does enjoy the occasional tuna juice treat)! He is a dry kibble boy all the way.... my vet even tried giving him the "yummiest, never turned down" (her words, haha) cat food when she wanted to pill him once and he barely gave it a full sniff before turning up his nose! I know he drinks plenty of water though (he has a water cooler type dish, a regular dish that sits in the bathtub and frequents the toilet as well).... so as long as you see that your kitty drinks plenty of fluids, it shouldnt be a huge problem (granted you should have him on a good dry food as well).... I've given up on spending money on various wet foods just to have them rejected.... easier for me as a college student, plus since he's free-fed kibble, I don't get 5am wake up calls cuz *SOMEBODY'S* hungry! hahaha

Thanks for all the good advice. Nico is definetly a "bury" cat- he obsessively buries his waste, excess or unwanted food, treats I give him he's not fond of, etc etc. I will try getting him some new food this weekend- maybe some moist pouches. I just didn't want to drastically change his food overnight- as kitten he was known for a bit of a sensitive tummy.

this topic is very interesting to me, because the vet seems to think mabel has a food allergy. we've recently started switching over to Natural Balance venison and green peas (allergen-free formula). are there any other flavors out there? that are allergen free.

*sorry...didn't mean to hijack the thread*

On the west side of... of... somewhere.
My two don't like the Nutro canned food because it's in chunks. They just don't like chunk canned food. They love loaf style and shredded canned food. They really love the Pro Plan cans that have stuff like Sardines & Tuna in Aspic... basically fish parts. There's other flavors that have the same style. They practically inhale those. It may just be the style of the food. try cans of loaf style, and shredded style. Nico may like those.

Nico gets the solid stuff- i gave him a can of chunks as a kitten and he vomited them back up promptly. I have been careful to keep him on the solid stuff, but I think maybe now he can try a bit more variety.

There are different brands, but the idea behind feeding him the venison and green peas is to give him food with ingredients he hasn't had, so it probably wouldn't be a good idea to give him another "allergen-free formula" until after he's been on the Natural Balance only for several weeks.
Here's an article with information about food allergies and allergen-free formulas: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/food_allergies.html
