Hi everyone!! My little girl, Jingles
, loves playing with her food. We free feed her dry food and we find it all over the house. She paws it out of the bowl and swats it around. Sometimes she will eat it after she's done with playing but not most of the time. We've tried everything we can think of to stop her short of taking away her food. We've tried distracting her with other toys, clapping our hands, etc. I'm at a loss. I feel that I'm throwing aways more food than they are actually eating.

Any suggestions would be great.

PS - My other cat, Jangles
, doesn't do this at all and he sometimes tries to stop her - its very funny to see

You can feed her at set intervals. Then she'll be hungry enough to eat everything at one sitting.

I just take a whisk broom and sweep up the food and put it back in the bowl. It's a pain but I'd rather do that than waste the food.

I've occasionally seen pet bowls that have inward-sloping sides that create a bit of an overhang around the top edge -- maybe one of those would make it harder for her to bat it outta the park! ;-)

Feed her wet food, sounds to me like the dry food isn't satisfying her much.

Have you thought of a dry food dispensing unit? Most pet stores have them. I believe some of them allow the cat to manipulate it in some way so that when triggered it will release the food. I guess it would kind of go along with the other reader's suggestions of interval feedings, but the cat could be in control of when he/she ate.

i havent read any of the replies yet, but depending on how much you feed her..what if you just feed her less/smaller amounts? i feed my cat canned food, when i used to give him more he'd make a mess of it, but when i portion it out very tiny he eats it all and i doesnt get all crummy and all over the place...??

My cat Duke even "plays" with his wet food. He is so scared of somone stealing it he grabs the biggest chunk and takes it in behind a chair or under the dining room table. He dosn't tend to play with the dry but while smooshing his face into the bowl it tends to fall out around the edge, then he and Sibohan play with it later. You would think with all the toys they have that they would be able to find somthing Better to do

Jingles actually really likes her dry food - she comes running when its refill time. She also gets wet food - which she also plays with. Carol - I will look into those types of bowls.

Thanks!

Kitty does almost the same thing. She takes her food out of the dish piece by piece and eats it off the floor. Sometimes I have to put several pieces back into the dish, but she usually gets most of it eaten. She also sticks her paw into her water bowl and drinks it off her paw. I'm not sure why she does that.

We have food both in our room and downstairs. The bowl upstairs is clean. I watch him try to pick up the food he dropped (it's so cute). But when it comes to the food downstairs, it's a mess! it's all over his food area and he always drops his food in his water.

mine, too. but i read somewhere that cats tend to shake their heads when they take a bite - an instinctive movement that helps tear the meat from the animal. i've always thought that's why the kibble gets everywhere...
