I have a ten week old kitten and his mama . My boyfriend is out getting rid of the other two kittens as we speak. This kitten is the runt and he will not leave his mama alone. she looks kinda pissed everytime he tries to suckle her too. Is there anything that I can do to get him to stop this? Or is this slighlty normal behavior? I am keeping this kitten just for the info.

This is normal behavior....even though kittens wean from their mom between 6-8 weeks of age....they will often go back to mom to get comforted and to still suckle. Have you made arrangements to have mom spayed?? Also..where is your boyfriend taking the other 2 kittens?

Here is a link to low cost spay clinics in South Carolina if you need one:

my boyfriend is hanging out at petsmart to get rid of the other two. we found a good home for the two males that were also part of the litter.

I am going to get her spayed. How early can you get a male kitten neutered?

I would shoot myself if I had to take them to a shelter there is not a single no kill shelter in my area.

They can be neutered as early as 8 weeks of age...but you need to ask the vet office if they will perform neuters at this age.

Your boyfriend should screen the people carefully..what good is it to give away the kittens only to have the adoptors take them to the pound?? He should also ask for an adoption fee to ensure that the people will spay/neuter these kittens.

Hanging out at PETsMART and handing out kittens to just anyone is not a good way to find homes for cats. In fact it's a good way to set the kittens up for very uncertain futures.

This document has very helpful information: http://www.bestfriends.org/nomorehom...mesforpets.pdf

As to the 10-week-old suckling, it is extremely normal behavior. Ideally kittens should be allowed to nurse until at least 12 weeks. They rarely wean on their own before 14 weeks, though they taper off nursing by this point so they are only nursing once or twice a day at that age.

There are people who look for free kittens and puppies everyday to be used as "bait animals" for dogfighting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do some research and find out what a horrible death it is for bait animals to be mauled by fighting dogs! Dont ever just give away any animal, if someone has to pay a price for them, they wont be used in such manners!

I always cringe when I hear people say they are "getting rid of kittens" Sounds to me anyway like they are taking out the trash.
Kittens are not disposable and if you accept the responsibility of bringing them into the world by not spaying and neutering all your cats, or letting your fertile female get outside, then you need to take responsibility for finding good loving homes for them. This means screening the people that come up to adopt, and charging for each kitten, even if it is just $5.00

Your momcat, once she is spayed, will soon tire of the littlest kitten's attempt to nurse on her and will be growling and spitting and swatting him.

I love them all , I dont want to give them up but I live in an apartment where I can only have two pets. I would rather not get evicted.

There is not a no kill animal shelter around here. If there was I would take them there. Im not gonna take them somewhere where I know for a fact that they would be killed. I would rather take a chance that they will have a life at all. But anyways I know someone who I may be able to sucker into taking them. I just have to call her.

You have options other than take them to the shelter or hand them out in parking lots. Have you had a chance to check out the link I provided? It has a lot of useful information on how to find and screen good, responsible homes.

Being used for pit bull bait, being starved or locked away because he was "cute" as a baby but now has gotten too big, being used for medical experimentation, being dumped outdoors with no idea how to fend for himself, having one litter of kittens after another or constantly having abscessed fight wounds because s/he was never spayed or neutered, suffering from lack of medical care when ill or injured, ending up at the shelter two years from now when they get sick of him and his chances for adoption are much less...these are all very possible fates for kittens who are handed out to in parking lots to the first takers. Bottom line is that handing them out for free is about as much of a Russian roulette game as taking them to the shelter - either way they could go on to have great lives with great families or they could have a very different fate. No matter what, their fate is in your hands and rests on your decisions.

You did a good deed by taking in the mother cat, but now it is your responsibility to see that the kittens have good and safe lives for the rest of their lives. Nothing can mitigate your responsibility for this at this point. Please take the necessary steps to make sure the homes that you find are good and responsible. Something as simple as calling a couple of personal references or better yet their vet to find out what kind of people they are and how they have taken care of their pets in the past will tell you a great deal. Call their landlord to know if they are allowed to have pets in their apartment - you would be shocked at the number of people who try to get pets without realizing that their lease had a no pets clause. It's really not a lot of work and it is so important because you are making a decision that will affect the cat for the rest of his life and may literally be life or death.

Unless your landlord is a tyrant who keeps his nose in everyone's business all the time, he is unlikely to figure out that you have a couple of extra cats for some time. If he does find out you can make up a story like you are petsitting for your friend for the week or you just found a stray and are taking him to the shelter on Saturday when you have a day off. Either way you have time to go about finding homes for these kittens the correct way. Their lives depend on your doing so.

Desiresgrasp....I know you mean well and thank you for taking in the pregnant mom. From your recent post, your boyfriend did not find the other 2 kittens homes??? If not, then I would certainly download the PDF that semiferal provided.

I completely understand your situation....you are trying to do best by these little ones..and we are simply trying to help you. Another idea is to post about them on Craigslist and Petfinder. Let me know if you need the links.
